"The four men were arrested in an early morning raid from the eastern district of the city and belong to a religious and political party," Tariq Jameel, the Karachi police chief, said. The police seized revolvers and ammunition from the militants. "During initial interrogation they have confessed they belong to a group of 22 young men, some of whom are students," Jameel said. He declined to identify the party to which the militants belonged. The registration of the country's 15,000 madrassas was announced in January 2002, but barely a few hundred registered. Hashim Qadeer is said to have introduced Pearl to British-born Sheikh Omar, who faces the death penalty for Pearl's 2002 murder. Police have not charged Qadeer in connection with Pearl's murder but only in connection with a second, unrelated murder.
