IMF mission due on 14th to start review

ISLAMABAD, Aug 9: A six-member IMF technical mission is due to arrive here on August 14 to start review of the measures announced in the budget of 2005-06 and projections for the next fiscal year.

An official told Dawn on Tuesday that the technical mission during its six-day stay would review the performance of all major sectors of the economy and reforms of Central Board of Revenue (CBR). Finance Division Joint Secretary Mahmood Akhtar would give a detailed presentation to the visiting mission on general overview of all economic indicators during the year 2004-05 and measures taken in the budget of 2005-06.

While Chairman CBR would give a briefing on collection of taxes during the year 2004-05, projections for the year 2005-06 and reasons for low buoyancy. The mission would also be briefed on balance of payments, external financing and debt servicing.

This would be followed by a presentation on the performance of individual taxes and measures so far taken under the Tax Administration Reform of Pakistan (TARP). Commerce Secretary would brief the mission on post-MFA (Multi-Fibre Agreement) environment, development on South Asia Free Trade Area (SAFTA), trade with India, developments with European Union and United States.
