Wrong poll symbols awarded

By Our Staff Correspondent

FAISALABAD, Aug 6: The communication gap between the Election Commission officials and Returning Officers (RO) created problems for more than hundred local bodies candidates due to allotment of wrong election symbols.

Sources in the Election Commission office said over 300 candidates for the councillors have been allotted symbols in violation of the government instructions.

The ROs had allotted symbols to candidates ignoring the priority list which was a violation of the instructions. This situation not only created problems for the commission staff but also disturbed the candidates.

Sources said special notices would be issued by the ROs to affected candidates and they would be summoned in their offices so that they could be allotted new election symbols.

After this mistake, a number of candidates who had started their canvassing with their election symbols would face serious problems after the allotment of new symbols.

Commission officials pointed out all these cases were referred to the District Returning Officer on Saturday to take immediate steps.

They are of the view that the ROs had consulted old book of election symbols instead of its amended and fresh copy, which resulted in the serious mistake.
