Iran proposes MoU to India for gas pipeline project- NEW DELHI, Aug 3 (APP) Iran on Wednesday proposed signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India for setting a timeframe for implementation of the dollar 7.4 billion Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project. Tehran, at the beginning of a two-day special Joint Working Group meeting on the pipeline here, proposed an MoU, similar to the one it signed with Pakistan last month, setting a clear timeframe. "We have proposed an MoU to have a clear timeframe between seller (Iran) and buyer (India)," National Iranian Gas Export Co (NIGEC) managing director R Javadi was quoted as saying here. New Saudi king vows to work for justice RIYADH, Aug 3 (AFP) - Saudi Arabia's new King Abdullah vowed on Wednesday to work for justice and serve his people in his first address to the nation after succeeding his late half-brother king Fahd. "I pledge to God, and then I pledge to you that I take the Koran as my constitution, Islam as my programme and to work for justice and serve all citizens without discrimination," he said. "I feel that the burden is heavy, and that the responsibility is great," he said in a speech aired on state television after receiving the pledge of allegiance from the Saudi people, officials and religious leaders."I ask for God's assistance, and I ask Him to give me the strength to pursue the same path as the founder of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the great king Abdel Aziz Al-Saud. Landmark in-orbit space shuttle repair job completed HOUSTON, Texas, Aug 3 (AFP) - US astronaut Stephen Robinson returned to the International Space Station after making an unprecedented six-hour emergency space walk to make repairs on the Discovery space shuttle. It was "a great choreography between robotics and you guys," said a NASA ground control official monitoring the walk. "Thanks to the whole team for making this day extra smooth and easy," said Robinson. Dangling from the ISS' robotic arm, Robinson removed both pieces of protruding tile gap filler he was assigned to retrieve, on an unprecedented in-orbit repair mission. As well as the repair operation, Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi and mission expert Robinson mounted a tool platform and installed a material science experiment for the ISS, and meanwhile retrieved a faulty heat dissipator on the orbiting space station during the operation. Mauritania army says to rule country for 2 years NOUAKCHOTT, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Mauritania's armed forces have set up a military council to rule the country and put an end to the "totalitarian regime" of President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya, a statement on the state news agency said on Wednesday. India says militants waiting in many Kashmir camps NEW DELHI, Aug 3 (Reuters) - India said on Wednesday militants were waiting in a large number of camps in Pakistani Kashmir to sneak across a ceasefire line into occupied Kashmir. "Recent reports indicate a large number of launching camps along the Line of Control (LoC) have been activated where militants have been kept in readiness for infiltration," Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the upper house of parliament. UAE Chief of Staff calls on President RAWALPINDI, Aug 3 (APP): Chief of Staff, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Lieutenant General Hamad Mohammad Tahni Al-Rumeithy, who is nowadays on an official visit to Pakistan, called on the President General Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday. Lt- Gen Hamad Mohammad Thani Al-Rumeithy also visited the Naval and Air Headquarters and called on Admiral Shahid Karim Ullah, Chief of Naval Staff and Air Chief Marshal Kaleem Saadat, Chief of the Air Staff in their respective Headquarters. Zambia agrees to deport London terrorism suspect to Britain LUSAKA, Aug 3 (AFP) - Zambia Wednesday officially announced it would deport to Britain the alleged mastermind behind the July 7 London bombings after arresting Briton Haroon Aswat in Lusaka two weeks ago. "We had discussions with the governments of the US and Britain and finally agreed that Mr Aswat should be deported to his country which is Britain," Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa told reporters in Lusaka. Korean and other delegates return to nuclear talks venue BEIJING, Aug 3 (AFP) - Parties to the six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear weapons programme returned to the main venue Wednesday evening, fueling speculation that discussions would continue overnight, state television and journalists reported. "At around 5pm, staff from the North Korean delegation returned to the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. And afterwards, Russian, US, South Korean delegations have also gone to the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse," China Central Television reported. Journalists also saw the Japanese delegation going to the guesthouse. A US embassy spokeswoman confirmed that a delegation led by deputy chief delegate Joseph DeTrani had returned to the guesthouse but she declined to say whether US chief envoy Christopher Hill was also taking part. "The North Koreans are in Daioyutai. I've got to see the Chinese." Hill told journalists as he left his hotel Wednesday evening. Red Cross says 84 dead in violence in Sudan capital KHARTOUM, Aug 3 (Reuters) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Wednesday it had counted 84 bodies from the violence in Sudan's capital that erupted after the death of former southern rebel leader John Garang. "We have a total of 84 dead bodies in the morgue," a spokeswoman for the ICRC told Reuters in Khartoum, saying they had been killed in violence that started on Monday and adding that Sudan's Red Crescent reported at least 300 wounded. Saudis pledge allegiance to new king RIYADH, Aug 3 (AFP) - Saudi clerics, tribal chiefs and officials pledged allegiance to King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz on Wednesday in a ceremony seen as a public endorsement of the new monarch of the oil powerhouse. King Abdullah and new Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz received Saudi prominent figures at a Riyadh royal palace after receiving condolences from foreign dignitaries over Monday's death of King Fahd. "This is a historic day... in which the Saudi people will express their complete unity" with the ruling family, said a commentary on state Saudi television which aired the ceremony. 14 US marines, reporter killed in Iraq BASRA, Iraq, Aug 3 (AFP) - Fourteen US marines were killed in a rebel attack in western Iraq on Wednesday following the death of a US freelance journalist who was gunned down in a relatively calm part of the country.The marines, along with an interpreter, were killed when their armoured vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb during combat operations near Haditha, 260 kilometers (160 miles) northwest of Baghdad, the US military said. One other marine was wounded. Ansar al-Sunna, an extremist group linked with the Al-Qaeda network, said in an Internet statement that it had killed eight US marines and captured a ninth in western Iraq. It said it had killed some of the marines on Monday by "slitting their throats," while others were shot. The statement could not be verified.It also said its fighters had captured a ninth US marine "who was wounded in an ambush... near Haditha." The group vowed to publish more details on the killings and pictures of the "American prisoner" later.The announcement of the marine deaths came a few hours after the news that US journalist Steven Vincent, 50, was shot dead after being kidnapped Tuesday evening from a street in central Basra.Vincent, who had been in Basra for the last two months, was picked up along with his female Iraqi translator who was also shot twice but survived."There were four gunmen in a white pick-up truck and they kidnapped the two," police lieutenant-colonel Karim al-Zaidi told AFP. "Vincent was killed, while the girl is alive."Vincent wrote for the Christian Science Monitor, The New York Times and the conservative National Review magazine. Ex-Malaysian deputy PM Anwar wins apology, damages for 1998 assault KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 (AFP) - Malaysia's former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday won a public apology and undisclosed damages for the beating he suffered at the hands of the then-police chief after his 1998 arrest. In a civil suit which opened in court Monday, Anwar had demanded an apology and compensation from the government, former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, and former police inspector-general Rahim Noor. But under an out-of-court deal, the case was dropped in return for an apology from Rahim as well as a sum in damages -- although Anwar's lawyer Gobind Singh said both sides agreed not to disclose who was paying. 3 killed, 35 injured in bus-coach collision CHINIOT Aug 3 (APP)- Three persons were killed and about 35 injured in the head-on collision between a bus and a coach on Lahore-Pindi Bhattian road near Adda Sheikhi, 10 km from here early Wednesday morning. The bus proceeding from Lahore to Chiniot (6445) while overtaking another vehicle rammed into an airconditioned passenger coach (LE-8688) coming from the opposite side. The fronts of both vehicles were totally smashed, survivors and police sources told newsmen later. Two persons were killed on the spot, including the bus driver Gul Feroz Khan (of district Hazara) and a passenger Muhammad Shafiq of Lalian area. A third died later in hospital but his identity was not known. Most of the injured including women and children were moved to THQ Hospital Chiniot by Eidhi Centre ambulances, while those in critical condition were referred to the Allied Hospital, Faisalabad. Mauritanian army troops launch coup NOUAKCHOTT, Aug 3 (AFP) Mauritanian army troops, dominated by presidential guard members, took over Wednesday the armed forces headquarters, state radio and television buildings in the capital Nouakchott in a coup d'etat, a witness said. Troops had moved into the buildings at 5:00 am (0500 GMT) and blocked off access to the presidential palace and government ministers, while President Maaouyia Ould Taya was in Saudi Arabia for the funeral of King Fahd. Air France says 22 injured in Toronto crash PARIS, Aug 2 (Reuters) Air France said 22 people were lightly injured but no one was killed on its Airbus plane that crashed and burst into flames after landing at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Tuesday.
