SUKKUR, Aug 1: The Indus River was flowing at a moderate level at the Sukkur Barrage, while at the Gudu Barrage it was in a low flood position. According to figures released by the irrigation officials here, the upstream discharge at the Sukkur Barrage at 6.00PM on Monday was 4,10,610 cusecs of water and at the downstream it was 3,50,503 cusecs. A fall of more than 30,000 cusecs was recorded at the Sukkur Barrage compared to the figure of July 31(Sunday) as the upstream discharge remained 4,40,000 cusecs.
Meanwhile, at the Gudu Barrage the upstream discharge on Monday was 3,99,468 cusecs of water as compared to 4,13,000 cusecs recorded on Sunday at 6.00PM. Irrigation officials were of the view that the river was now fast receding, and as such ruled out likelihood of further rise in the water level in the coming days.
According to them, all vulnerable bunds of Sukkur and Gudu barrages were intact, and the irrigation staff was looking after them round the clock. There was a reported breach in the Warah Canal, Madeji, on Sunday, about 60km from the Sukkur Barrage, which caused inundation of hundreds of acres of farmland in a vast area. Later, the breach was filled by the area people with the help of irrigation personnel.—APP
