Lucky Murad comes from behind in photo finish

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, July 31: The change of name proved lucky for the chestnut gelding, Lucky Murad, who produced a devastating turn of foot to catch the front running grey gelding, Millennium Count and beat by a short head in the supporting event of the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Millennium Count led the field from the start till 100 metres from the finishing line but Lucky Murad caught the leader and then in a good burst of speed pipped Millennium Count at the winning post to win in photo-finish by short-head.

Bone Crusher finished third, a distance further behind while Green Street completed the frame among ten runners.

This was Lucky Murad’s fourth victory in a row. He scored his earlier three victories under old name, King Maker on June 20, July 17 and July 24. The owner changed his name a few days back and he went on to win the fourth race under the new name of Lucky Murad on Sunday.

A race later, long shot bay mare, When Or Where ran upto her owner’s expectations to defeat stablemate Who Dares in a fine front-running display in the feature and seventh race of the day.

The bay filly, Puma’s Princess finished third while Druree completed the board among eight runners.

Riding boy Sajjad Hussain stole the limelights of the day’s racing when he rode home two winners when a card of seven races was gone through. Sajjad first rode Aya Chandiwala in the fifth race and then followed it up with a fluent win on When And Where in the seventh and last race of the day. All races were contested over 1100 metres sprinting distance.

The race-goers braved humid and hot weather to see the races when the first favourites were beaten in all the seven races.
