Casualties in Iraq, July 31 A car bomb exploded at an Iraqi police checkpoint south of Baghdad, killing seven civilians and wounding 12, police said. The attack occurred about 50 km (30 miles) south of Baghdad near the town of Haswa, the police department in nearby Hilla said. The explosives-packed vehicle had been left by the side of the road, near the checkpoint, and was detonated remotely. Three of the wounded were policemen. - Gunmen ambushed a convoy from Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress party, killing one security guard and wounding three, an aide to Chalabi said. Entifadh Qanbar told Reuters a large convoy carrying an international delegation was attacked as it drove through the town of Mahawil on the way to the southern city of Kerbala. Chalabi was not in the convoy, Qanbar said. - Gunmen opened fire on a group of cooks leaving a military base in Baquba, killing one and wounding three in the town 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, police said. - An Iraqi translator for the U.S. military was shot dead by gunmen as he was leaving his house in Kirkuk, 250 km (150 miles) north of Baghdad, police said. - Insurgents attacked a minibus transporting Iraqi civilians working at an American base, killing three and critically wounding three in Baiji, 180 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad, on Saturday night. - Gunmen opened fire on the convoy of Ibrahim Issawi, senior adviser to the environment minister, killing one of his security guards and wounding three on Saturday, the Defence Ministry said in a statement. ARD decides to hold APC on August 11 Islamabad,July 31 (PPI) Accusing the govt of pre poll rigging in LG polls,Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) Sunday decided to hold an All Parties Conference on August 11 on the issue of Local Body elections. The decision to hold APC was taken in ARD's meeting held here with Makhdoom Amin Faheem in the chair at the PML(N) central office.After the meeting Chairman ARD Amin Faheem alongwith Raja Zafar ul Haq and other leaders announced the decision at a news conference. Amin Faheem said ARD condemns the worst manipulation and interference in the current local body elections by Gen Pervez Musharraf,the Prime Minister, Chairman Senate, Chief Ministers of Sindh and Punjab and the Federal and provincial administrations. He said massive use of Government machinery and sources are reported in the national press and the electronic media but the election commission of Pakistan has chosen to look the other way which is very disappointing. ARD meeting passed the resolutation which said 'The blatant and illegal interference by the Federal and provincial Administrations presents the darkest picture of rigging in the history of this region. Floods kill 16 in northeast Iran TEHRAN, July 31 (Reuters) - Floods caused by heavy rain killed 16 people in northeastern Iran on Sunday, the official IRNA news agency said. It quoted a local governor as saying the people were killed in the village of Galidagh in Golestan province which borders Turkmenistan on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The floods also damaged houses and bridges and cut electricity to some 30 villages in the area. Floods in a nearby region killed at least 170 people in 2001.(Posted @ 22:58 PST)

Picnicker drowns, three others rescued Thatta, July 31 (PPI): A picnicker belonging to Ranchore Lines Karachi drowned into the Keenjhar Lake near here on Sunday, while three others were rescued. According to details, 18-years-old Kamran son of Abdul Sattar Khichi of Ranchore Lines had came to the lake along with his friends to have a picnic, but sadly he drowned while bathing in the lake. His body was recovered and sent to Karachi. In another incident, three men belonging to Pakistan Chowk area Karachi, Afzal, Nadeem and Akbar were rescued by local divers, while they were drowning into the lake.(Posted @ 19:50 PST)

Six more arrested in Britain over London bombings LONDON, July 31 (AFP) - Six more people were arrested in two police raids south of London on Sunday in connection with the July 21 bombings in the British capital, police said. "We have carried out search warrants at two addresses in the Sussex area in connection with July 21," a spokeswoman for London's Metropolitan police said. Zambia to hand over bombing suspect to Britain: police LUSAKA, July 31 (AFP) - Zambia is preparing to hand over to Britain a Briton of Indian origin arrested in this southern African nation 11 days ago and who reportedly was the mastermind of the London bombings, police told AFP. "We have tentatively agreed to hand him over to the British government," said the official, who asked not to be named. Four die in Taiwan tourist boat fire TAIPEI, July 31 (AFP) - Four Taiwanese were killed Sunday when a fire broke out on a boat carrying 138 local tourists and crew to an island, coastguards said. Television footage provided by the Coast Guard Administration showed the blazing boat which caught fire around noon as it was heading from the southern fishing port of Tungkang to Hsiaoliuchiu island southwest of Taiwan. Four people drowned after some panic-stricken tourists leapt into the sea to escape the flames. More than 10 others were injured. The rest of the tourists were rescued by a fleet of six coastguard patrol boats and fishing boats. More heavy rains in India, nearly 1,000 dead BOMBAY, July 31 (Reuters) - Fresh torrential rains in western India stopped flight operations and disrupted train services in Bombay on Sunday, and officials said the death toll from severe flooding in the region could soon reach 1,000. Flights at Bombay airport were disrupted for a second day on Sunday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.Poor visibility because of the rains has hit flights. Airlines have a huge backlog of pending flights and waiting passengers. East China tornado kills 11 children - reports BEIJING, July 31 (Reuters) - A tornado that lashed east China killed 15 people, including 11 schoolchildren who died when theroof of their classroom collapsed, media reports said on Sunday. The tornado, packing winds of more than 120 kph (75 mph),struck Lingbi county in Anhui province on Saturday, overturning vehicles and uprooting trees. The pupils were in the first year of junior-middle school. That would put their age around 12 or 13. Two leftist guerrillas killed, soldier wounded in north Philippines clash MANILA, July 31 (AFP) - Two communist guerrillas were killed and a soldier was wounded early Sunday in a clash in the northern Philippines, the military said. A gunfight broke out at dawn between an infantry reconnaisance patrol and about 15 New People's Army guerillas near the coastal town of Santa Lucia, 275 kilometers (170 miles) north of Manila, the military said in a report. Magnitude-6.0 quake strikes off Indonesian coast HONG KONG July 31 (APP/AP) _ A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Hong Kong seismologists said Sunday. No damage or injuries were reported.The tremor struck late Saturday and was recorded in Hong Kong at 11:18 p.m. (1518 GMT Saturday), the Hong Kong Observatory said in a statement. London bombers' girfriends nabbed trying to flee Britain: reports LONDON, July 31 (AFP) - The girlfriends of London bombing suspects Muktar Said Ibrahim and Ramzi Mohammed were arrested heading for London Stansted airport, British newspapers said Sunday. The pair were arrested Friday at central London's Liverpool Street railway terminus after fleeing a bag check. The Sunday Mirror newspaper said it is thought they were trying to board the Stansted Express train to the airport northeast of the city. Sunday Express said the two women had passports on them and were planning to head for Stansted or possibly Harwich ferry port on the eastern English coast. London's Metropolitan Police released the two without charge Friday after questioning.The Sunday Mirror quoted a security source as saying the pair were now being treated as witnesses rather than suspects. British police hold 11 over London terror bombings LONDON, July 31 (AFP) - British police were holding Sunday a total of 11 suspects in custody over the two waves of London bomb attacks this month. Twenty-eight people had been arrested during the investigation into the July 7 blasts which killed 56 people, the four bombers included, and the failed second attack on July 21, police said in a statement Saturday. Eleven remain in police custody. An additional man has been held under a European arrest warrant in Rome said.At least four of the alleged July 21 bombers are now held -- three in London and one in Rome -- but police have not confirmed reports that a "fifth bomber" who dumped an unexploded device in a west London park also had been caught. Negotiators in North Korea talks discuss final, joint statement BEIJING, July 31 (AFP) - The six nations negotiating an end to North Korea's nuclear weapons programme met Sunday to hammer out a joint statement, buoying hopes that the talks could for the first time agree a common position. Talks began shortly after 10:00 am (0200 GMT) to review a draft statement presented by China setting out a common position for the six parties to go forward. Three previous rounds of talks have failed to reach such a point. US envoy Christopher Hill said late Saturday the presented text "represents a good basis for further negotiations and for further discussions. "This was the first opportunity to take something that could become the final document and we will try to see if we can reach an agreement on it," Hill said.
