U.S. Muslims issue anti-terrorism "fatwa" WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) - Top U.S. Muslim scholars issued a "fatwa," or religious edict, against terrorism on Thursday and called on Muslims to help authorities fight the scourge of militant violence. The fatwa was part of efforts by U.S. Muslims to counter perceived links between Islam and terrorism and avert any negative backlash after this month's bombings by suspected Islamic extremists in London and Egypt. "Having our religious scholars side by side with our community leaders leaves no room for anybody to suggest that Islam and Muslims condone or support any forms or acts of terrorism," said Esam Omeish, president of the Muslim American Society, one of the groups which announced the fatwa.(Posted @ 23:35 PST)

Bush, Musharraf, discuss war on terrorism WASHINGTON, July 28 (AFP) - US President George W. Bush and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf spoke by telephone Thursday, after Pakistani authorities nabbed a suspect in the murder of a US reporter, the White House said. "The president spoke with President Musharraf earlier today. They talked about US-Pakistan relations, they discussed the global war on terrorism, and they talked about regional issues," said Bush spokesman Scott McClellan. The conversation came after Pakistani police said that security services have arrested a fugitive suspect in the murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl during their ongoing raids against Islamic extremists. Hashim Qadeer, arrested in the eastern city of Gujranwala on Wednesday, is said to have introduced the US journalist to British-born Sheikh Omar, who faces the death penalty for Pearl's grisly 2002 murder. Pearl, the financial daily's Mumbai-based South Asia correspondent, disappeared in Karachi on January 23, 2002, while working on a story on Pakistani militant groups. Pearl was abducted and a graphic video depicting his gruesome decapitation was later delivered to the US consulate in the southern port city of Karachi.(Posted @ 21:50 PST)

More bombers may try to strike-London police chief LONDON, July 28 (Reuters) - London's police chief warned Britons on Thursday that more cells of would-be bombers could strike as police made nine arrests in their hunt for the men behind failed attacks on the city's transport system last week. Commissioner Ian Blair said the capital had been lucky that bombs on three underground trains and a bus had not exploded fully on July 21. Three men still wanted for the attacks remained a danger and might not be the only threat, he said. "This is not the B-team, these weren't the amateurs," Blair said of the second group of attackers. "They made a mistake -- they only made one mistake and we're very very lucky." Police arrested nine men in Tooting, south London, on Thursday morning, bringing to 20 the number of people being held in connection with the failed July 21 attacks. Police said the nine did not include the three suspected bombers they are still hunting. They hope the arrest of Yasin Hassan Omar, 24, will provide a breakthrough in the search for the three other suspects. Blair said his force was reviewing 15,000 closed circuit television tapes, had taken 1,800 witness statements and received 5,000 calls to its anti-terrorism hotline.(Posted @ 18:25 PST)
