10 die in Yemen unrest

SANAA, July 20: At least 10 Yemenis were killed and several others wounded in demonstrations on Wednesday over the government’s decision to more than double some fuel prices in the impoverished republic, witnesses said.

“The number of fatalities has increased to five in clashes between demonstrators and security forces in the town of Zamar,” 100 kilometres south of the capital Sanaa, one witness said.

Witnesses had said earlier that two demonstrators were killed and one was wounded as demonstrators locked horns with security forces in Zamar.

Seven members of the Central Security special forces were also wounded, witnesses added.

Meanwhile, five other demonstrators were killed in the town of Al-Dali, 250 kilometres south of the capital, witnesses said.—AFP
