The rebels, of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), were killed on Saturday during an operation in Boumerdes province, some 50 Km (30 miles) east of the capital Algiers. "The terrorists belong to GSPC, which is still focusing its actions in this region," the source told Reuters. The result meant the three-match series was level at 1-1 after England won Thursday's opener at Headingley by nine wickets. The third and final match of the series takes place at The Oval on Tuesday.(Posted @ 22:45 PST) Landmine kills two children in Kosovo, injures three Pristina (dpa) - Two children from an Albanian family were killed and three other children injured in a landmine blast Sunday as they played near their home, local police confirmed. The mine detonated just 500 metres from the family home in the town of Klina in the province of Tiere. The region was not previously believed to be a heavily mined area. Injuries to two of the children are reported to be life-threatening, according to police in the district town of Pec. The background to the accident remains unclear.(Posted @ 22:38 PST) Guddu, Trimmu to endure high floods Monday ISLAMABAD, Jul 10 (APP): Chief Meteorologist Shaukat Ali Awan Sunday said that the water level at Guddu Barrage was about 522,000 cusecs at 6:00 pm, but was likely to increase till Monday morning. Talking to PTV he said, water level at Trimmu Barrage was 129,000 cusecs at noon. It has increased upto 135,000 cusecs.It could reach upto 250,000 cusec. It would be from lower to medium level flood.The warning has already been issued to the adjoining villages. The danger level at Sukkur Barrage was 700,000 cusec. 3 dead, 1 missing in southern Japan as heavy rains hit TOKYO, July, 10 (APP/AP) -Heavy rains drenched southern Japan on Sunday, flooding homes, touching off mudslides that buried buildings and leaving three people dead, police said. One other person was missing. More than 360 millimeters of rain had fallen in Hita city, 808 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, in seasonal showers since Saturday, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. Public broadcaster NHK said an 81-year-old man in Kokonoe city was buried along with his home by sliding topsoil from a nearby mountain slope. A 91-year-old woman and her 57-year-old son went missing in Hita after a mudslide rammed into their home, but the woman's body was later found, it said. Her son remains missing. In neighboring Nagasaki prefecture, the body of an 80-year-old man was pulled from a rain-swollen river on Saturday, NHK said. The Meteorological Agency forecast as much as 70 millimeters of rain would fall per hour in parts of the southernmost main islands of Kyushu and Shikoku through early Monday.(Posted @ 21:23 PST) 12 Afghan soldiers killed in land mine blast KHOST, Afghanistan, July 10 (AFP) - At least 12 Afghan soldiers were killed and two wounded in southeastern Paktia province after their vehicle ran over a land mine Sunday, the provincial deputy police chief said.The incident occurred as Afghan and US forces were on their way from the provincial capital Gardez to Paktia province's Janikhail district, some 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of the capital Kabul. It is unknown if any US troops were killed or wounded in the blast, Deputy Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Salim told AFP.(Posted @ 21:20 PST) Flood destroys eight houses in city CHITRAL: July 10 (APP): At leaset eight houses were washed away by heavy flood at Briep village some 130 KM from Chitral city, police sources said. Flood was caused by melting of snow which damaged eight houses in the area. Residents of the area are shifting to some safer places, police added. It is worth mentioning here that the area received heavy flood a few days earlier as a result some of which 45 houses were damaged. Residents of the area have appealed to the Federal and Provincial governments for compensating the affected people. Meanwhile a woman committed suicide by jumping in Chitral river. Body was later recovered from the river. An aged woman jumped in Chitral River and committed suicide. The deceased belong to Hoon (shiaqotak) near Chitral town. The explosion appeared to have been caused by a bomb placed in a rubbish bin near a bank in the main square of Cesme, the report said. The town is an especially popular getaway for residents of Izmir, around 30 kilometres to the east. The convoy of about 30 policemen was on a routine patrol when it came under attack Saturday in the Bahramcha area of Deshu district in Helmand province, some 690 kilometers (431 miles) south of the capital Kabul. "Four police were killed in the two-hour exchange of fire and six other missing police were later found beheaded with their heads atop their chest after a long search for them," Mohammed Rasoul the border brigade commander of Deshu district told AFP. Initially 16 police went missing soon after the fighting, six police were found immediately, four were killed on the spot and six police were taken by Taliban, Rasoul said. The headless bodies of the captured six were later found close to the Pakistani border, he added. (Posted @ 09:30 PST) US, Britain mull major troop pull-out from Iraq next year LONDON, July 10 (AFP) - The United States and Britain are considering the withdrawal of more than 100,000 coalition troops from Iraq next year as one of many options but no decision has been made, the British defence ministry said Sunday. "We have always said that it is our intention to hand over the lead in fighting terrorists to the Iraqi Security Forces as their capability increases," said a defence ministry spokeswoman. "We therefore continually produce papers outlining possible options... this is but one of a number of papers produced over recent months covering various possible scenarios," she told AFP. "It is simply prudent planning." The spokeswoman was referring to a document by British Defence Secretary John Reid, which was leaked to the Mail on Sunday.
