US, NKorea meet, agree to resume six party talks on July 25: US official BEIJING, July 9 (AFP) - The United States and North Korea agreed to resume multilateral talks aimed at ending Pyongyang's nuclear weapons drive on July 25 after holding a rare meeting in Beijing late Saturday, US officials said. "North Korea confirmed that the meeting will be held and also agreed that the objective of the talks is denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and they wanted to come to make progress," a US administration official accompanying Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on her visit to Beijing told reporters. The secret meeting between US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs Christopher Hill and South Korea's Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Gye Gwan was held at a Chinese Foreign Ministry facility as Rice touched down in the Chinese capital. Rice and Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing were scheduled to make a joint press statement on Sunday on the resumption of the six-party talks, among the United States, the two Koreas, Japan, China and Russia.(Posted @ 21:05 PST)

Six more Russian soldiers killed, 10 wounded in Chechnya VLADIKAVKAZ, Russia, July 9 (AFP) - Six Russian soldiers have been killed and 10 wounded in the past 24 hours in the Caucasian republic of Chechnya, its pro-Russian government said Saturday. Three troops died and five others were wounded in attacks on military positions which were hit 14 times in the period. Two soldiers died and two were hurt Saturday when a military truck was blown up by a home-made mine hear the Russian base at Khankala. No bodies formally identified in London bombings: police LONDON, July 9 (AFP) - None of the bodies of the more than 50 people killed in the London bomb attacks has yet been formally identified, the police officer in charge of the task said on Saturday. "As yet we have no evidence to lead us to identify any person that has been a victim," Metropolitan Police detective superintendent Jim Dickie told a news conference. Dickie said the task of identifying the bodies had been made difficult by the force of the blasts in three underground trains and on a double-decker bus in the Thursday morning rush hour. "Most of the victims suffered extensive trauma -- by that I mean body parts and torsoes," he said, adding that those being treated in hospital were suffering from horrendous injuries. US-led forces release 76 Afghan prisoners KABUL, July 9 (AFP) - The US military Saturday released another batch of 76 Afghan prisoners as part of ongoing efforts to promote national reconciliation, officials said. "Today 76 prisoners who come from 16 different Afghan provinces were released," Sediq Wira, spokesman for the National Reconciliation Commission, told reporters in Kabul. Roadside bomb targets Iraqi army in Fallujah Baghdad (dpa) - A roadside bomb targeting an Iraqi army convoy exploded Saturday causing a number of casualties and destroying a military personnel carrier, witnesses said. A car bomber had earlier struck a joint U.S.-Iraqi military patrol late Friday killing two Iraqi soldiers and injuring three in Fallujah. Witnesses reported casualties among the Americans. Seven killed in bus accident in Siberia Moscow (dpa)- Seven people died and 16 people were hospitalised on Saturday when a bus and a milk truck collided near the Siberian city of Omsk, a police spokesman told Ria Novosti news agency. Resurgent Al-Qaeda behind deadly Afghan attacks: defence minister KABUL, July 9 (AFP) - A resurgent Al-Qaeda terror network has teamed up with Taliban militants in Afghanistan to unleash a wave of attacks which have killed about 600 people this year, Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak said Saturday. Pakistani troops hunt killer leopard ISLAMABAD, July 9 (Reuters) - A leopard has killed six people in the mountains of northern Pakistan and troops are now hunting the animal, police said on Saturday. The killings began early this month and the latest victim, yet another woman, was attacked on Friday, said Feroz Shah, senior superintendent of police in the town of Abbotabad. "So far there have been six cases of killing by leopard, all women," Shah told Reuters."That, perhaps, is because women go out alone to fetch wood and fodder." A team of police commandos waited in ambush for hours at the bloody site where the woman was killed on Friday, hoping the animal would return but it did not, he said. Iraq rebels attack key infrastructure BAGHDAD, July 9 (AFP) - Iraq rebels fired mortars at Baghdad's main oil refinery late Friday in a renewed assault on key infrastructure as a US commander suggested such attacks marked a new twist in insurgent tactics. A huge fire broke out at the Dura oil refinery on the outskirts of the capital after it was hit by two mortar rounds, oil ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said. Three people suffered minor burns, Jihad said. The capital's water supply has also come under mounting attack. On Thursday, insurgents bombed a key main, leaving half the city without water. Meanwhile, four US soldiers were wounded on Friday when a suicide bomber rammed an army patrol vehicle with his car and blew himself up, just north of Baghdad, the US military said. US forces detained 22 suspected insurgents in a sweep near the town of Fallujah, and four members of the same family, including a child and a woman, were found shot dead in their home in the northern refinery town of Baiji. Early Saturday, a police captain was shot dead in west Baghdad and two women were wounded when mortar rounds, aimed at a nearby army camp, fell on houses in the city of Samarra, north of the capital, police said. Taliban claim to have killed US commando in Afghanistan: report ISLAMABAD, July 9 (AFP) - Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan said Saturday they had executed an American commando they had been holding hostage since last week, a Pakistan-based news service reported. But a US military spokesman in Kabul said there was no proof and the search for the soldier was continuing. "Taliban have executed the arrested American at 11:00 am (0630 GMT) in Kunar's Shegal area," AIP (Afghan Islamic Press) quoted Taliban spokesman Mullah Abdul Latif Hakimi as saying. At least 23 dead in India bus plunge DEHRADUN, India, July 9 (AFP) - At least 23 people were killed and 25 injured Saturday when a crowded bus fell into a fast-flowing river Ganges near the temple town of Rishikesh in India's northern hill state of Uttaranchal, an official said. Taliban claims to have killed seven Afghan soldiers Kabul (dpa) - Taliban on Saturday claimed to have killed seven Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and detained six others after the insurgents ambushed the soldiers' convoy in the southern province of Helmand.
