CHITRAL, July 8: President Pervez Musharraf said on Friday that mainly Muslims would be facing repercussions of Thursday’s London bombings which he described as an act of flagrant terrorism.

“London blasts, an open act of terrorism, would have a deep impact, particularly on Muslims all over the world,” a private TV channel quoted President Musharraf as saying at a meeting of activists of the Pakistan Muslim League at the office of the Chitral district coordinator officer.

The acts of terrorism taking place in Afghanistan were casting serious impacts on Pakistan, the president added.

He said: “We should move together with the world in the war on terror and this way we would be on the safe side. Otherwise, we would be facing terrifying results.”

APP adds: Addressing a gathering of elders, the president said the government had pledged to take the fruits of economic development to the people of far-flung areas and bring them on a par with developed parts of the country.

The president said the country had attained a stable economic position by virtue of following policies consistently and introducing reforms. Now the government was focused on realizing socio-economic development at the grass-roots level.

“We are concentrating on bringing about a qualitative change in the lives of people and our efforts are geared towards enabling the people of far-off areas to achieve socio-economic progress through a series of development projects,” he said.

He announced that work on the Lowari Tunnel project would commence in October and be completed expeditiously to facilitate transportation and communication between Chitral and other parts of the country.

He said Pakistan had gained in international stature due to its policies and it had the potential to lead efforts for the development and well-being of the Muslim world. “Pakistan has strengthened its economic and defence pillars,” he said, adding that the country would have to counter extremism through efforts from all segments of society.

“We have to demonstrate with our actions that Pakistan was a moderate Islamic country - we will have to forge unity in our ranks and progress by developing our human capital and making use of vast natural resources,” he said.
