England beat Bangladesh LEEDS, England, June 26 (AFP) - England beat Bangladesh by five wickets in their Triangular Series one-day international at Headingley here Sunday. England's victory meant it would be they and world champions Australia who contest the July 2 Lord's final with two round-robin matches still to be played. Chasing a modest 209 for victory, England won with more than 11 overs to spare. Andrew Strauss, who made 98, was bowled by spinner Manjural Islam Rana going for his century with one run needed for victory.Earlier, England held Bangladesh to 208 for eight with pace bowling all-rounder Andrew Flintoff taking four for 29. Opener Javed Omar top scored with 81 but it took him a sedate 150 balls. Khaled Mashud's near run-a-ball 42 not out was the other major contribution. The next match of the tournament sees England facing Australia in a day/night fixture at Edgbaston on Tuesday. Methanol-laced bootleg liquor kills 45 people in Kenya NAIROBI, June 26 (AFP) - Forty-five people have died and dozens were in hospital in Kenya -- some of them having gone blind -- after drinking vast quantities of a methanol-laced alcoholic brew, health officials said on Sunday. "As of now, the death toll has hit 45," Wako Dulacha, medical officer for Machakos district, told AFP. Officials said Machakos District Hospital, 60 kilometres (38 miles) southwest of Nairobi, had discharged 28 people. Thirty-one others were still receiving treatment for severe poisoning from the bootleg alcohol mixture, lethally mixed with methanol to make it stronger. Of those at least 10 have "partially or completely" lost sight while nine others were transferred to the capital's Kenyatta National Hospital in critical condition.(Posted @ 23:45 PST)

Pakistan has best relations with U.S., China: says S. M. Zafar WASHINGTON, Jun 26 (APP)- Former law minister Senator S.M. Zafar has said that present government had many positive accomplishments to its credit, including outstanding economic performance, and credibility and image-building of Pakistan. "The image of Pakistan was high today, and the comity of nations acknowledge our country's vital importance," he told a large gathering of scholars and intelectuals, and Pakistani community. Addressing the Pakistani American Congress, he said "with the only super power of the day -United States, Pakistan has the best of close and cordial relations; while with the fast emerging future super power, i.e. China, Pakistan has time-tested and everlasting friendship." He referred to various positive economic indicators, and added, that independent and prestigious international institutions have adjudged Pakistan as "the second fastest growing economy in Asia," at 8.4 percent of growth rate for the past two years, "and, which the goverment is determined to sustain."(Posted @ 23:40 PST)

CM's residence attacked, guard injured QUETTA June 26 (PPI): Residence of Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Muhammad Yusuf in Kalat was damaged in rocket attack Saturday-Sunday night. According to details, unknown persons fired two rockets on the residence of Chief Minister in Kalat, about 80 miles south of Quetta along Quetta-Sibi section of national highway around 0130 am last night. The rockets damaged upper portion of the building. Two guards also received minor injuries. Soon after the firing of rockets, police and administration reached the site and started investigation. Chief Minister also arrived in Kalat today. Meanwhile, the issue was echoed in Balochistan Assembly here today. Blast in India's northeast wounds 12 GUWAHATI, India, June 26 (AFP) - At least 12 people including six paramilitary soldiers were wounded Sunday in a blast triggered by suspected separatist rebels in India's northeastern state of Assam, police said.At least four of the victims were in critical condition.The blast took place outside the main gate of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force headquarters in Assam's main city of Guwahati Sunday evening, a police spokesman said."A man came with a bag and asked a roadside vendor near the gate to keep it," the spokesman said."Within minutes of the departure of the suspect, there was a big explosion in which six civilians and six paramilitary soldiers were wounded."The victims were passers-by and off-duty troopers waiting near the gates of the complex, the spokesman said.(Posted @ 21:05 PST)

Pak Navy ships complete joint exercise with French Navy ISLAMABAD, Jun 26 (APP): Pakistan Navy ships MOAWIN and Tippu Sultan conducted successful joint exercise with the French Navy Units of Djibouti in Red and the Mediterranean Sea. The ships are presently on goodwill cruise to UK, USA and Mediterranean region. A number of surface, subsurface and air units of both the navies actively participated in the exercises. The exercises involved Combined Antisubmarine Exercises and various air and surface maneuvers and tactics. The exercise provided a classical arena in which units from both the navies were pitched against each other and subsequently drew lessons from critical analysis of threat scenarios. These exercises not only strengthened professional ties between the two navies but also provided an excellent opportunity to learn from each other's experiences of maritime warfare and enhance skills to deter seaward acts of terrorism. Upon completion of the exercises the ships have now reached Ireland where they were given warm welcome. This is the first time that Pakistan Navy ships have visited Ireland and it is expected to draw substantial diplomatic gains(Posted @ 18:55 PST).

Pakistan expresses concern at rise in Afghan opium production KARACHI, June 26 (AFP) - Pakistani authorities Sunday voiced concern at a rise in opium poppy cultivation in neighbouring Afghanistan, saying the increase is fuelling addiction among Pakistanis. The increasing poppy cultivation has "serious implications" in Pakistan, Brigadier Firzok Attaullah, chief of the Pakistan Coastguards, told reporters after setting ablaze more than six tonnes of drugs to mark the UN's international day against drug abuse. "Due to the increase in poppy cultivation to a great extent in Afghanistan, the movement of drugs through traditional routes has alarmingly maximised," said Attaullah. The drugs torched included 6.25 tonnes of hashish, about 18 kilograms of heroin and a huge amount of poppies. Eleven killed, 29 hurt in road accident in eastern Pakistan ISLAMABAD (DPA) - At least 11 people were killed and 29 others injured when a speeding bus crashed into a tractor-trailer in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province early Sunday, police said. Officer Mohammed Rafiq said the accident took place as the bus driver overtook another bus near Rafiqabad village in Layyah district, some 320 kilometres south of provincial capital Lahore. Big blast hits Mosul police station in Iraq MOSUL, Iraq, June 26 (Reuters) - A heavy explosion struck a district police headquarters building in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday, killing at least three people and wounding 14, police and hospital officials said.The death toll could rise as rescuers were still digging in the rubble of parts of the busy two-storey building, a Reuters journalist at the scene said. Three police injured in Dagestan blast MOSCOW, June 26 (AFP) - Three police officers were injured in an overnight bomb attack in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, which borders separatist Chechnya, official sources said Sunday. Early Saturday a powerful explosion hit a railway line in Dagestan, derailing a maintenance train and injuring the two drivers. US in talks with Iraq rebels: report LONDON, June 26 (AFP) - US officials have held talks with Iraqi insurgents in the hope of negotiating an eventual breakthrough that might reduce the violence in the country, The Sunday Times newspaper here reported, citing Iraqi sources. The talks took place at a summer villa near Balad in the hills 40 miles (65 kilometres) north of Baghdad on June 3 and ten days later, the weekly paper said, citing an Iraqi source said to have attended both meetings. During the talks, involving a former Iraqi minister and senior tribal leaders, a small group of insurgent commanders came face to face with four US officials, it said. At least 23 Colombian troops killed by rebels BOGOTA, Colombia, June 25 (Reuters) - At least 23 Colombian soldiers died in combat with Marxist rebels on Saturday, the army said .Seventeen soldiers died in the province of Putumayo, near the Ecuadorean border, when their base was attacked by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known by its Spanish initials FARC. Another eight soldiers went missing in the battle, while six more soldiers died in fighting with the guerrilla group in the province of North Santander, near the Venezuelan border.
