KARACHI, June 20: The City Nazim, Niamatullah Khan, has approved to set up two new women universities in the city. The coordinator to city nazim for education, Prof Naseem Siddique told a press briefing that the people of Karachi especially the women were demanding at least two new women varsities in the city because a large number of female students were deprived of their right to acquire higher education due to the co-education system in the University of Karachi.

Keeping in view the situation, the city nazim has announced to upgrade the Sir Syed Girls College into Sir Syed Women University and merging the two colleges, Khatoon Pakistan College and Home Economics College, into ‘Pakistan Women University’, he added.

Prof Siddique said that proper funds had been allocated for the purpose in the budget.

He said that a committee headed by Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid had been constituted for the women universities. The other members of the committee were EDO higher education, adviser to city nazim on education, principals of Khatoon Pakistan, Sir Syed and Home Economics colleges, Dr Rafeeq Alam, Dr Shakeelur Rehman and Rehana Afroz.

Prof Siddique maintained that the committee would review all rules and regulations and prepare a feasibility report, and submit its report within six months.

Meanwhile, the city nazim has directed all concerned departments to fully cooperate with the committee. — PPI
