President Musharraf briefed her about Pakistan's economic policies, fight against terrorism and Islamabad's efforts for establishment of peace and stability in the region. Welcoming the President, the Governor General said New Zealand looks forward to developing cooperative relationship with Pakistan in areas of mutual complementarities. The three militants were killed late Thursday during a clash in the Tangdar sector of northern Kupwara district, an army spokesman Vijay Batra told AFP. In the same district, suspects shot dead a civilian late Thursday, police said, adding that a former militant, who was leading a normal life after his release from prison, was shot dead in Srinagar Friday morning. In Tuz, 180 kilometres north of Baghdad, a car bomber tried to reach the house of a senior army officer Friday, but was repelled by guards and blew himself up, injuring six people, an Iraqi army spokesman said. (Posted @ 13:11 PST) U.S. military launches major combat operation in northwestern Iraq BAGHDAD, Iraq, June 17 (APP/AP) The U.S. military launched a major combat operation with 1,000 Marines and Iraqi soldiers in northwestern Iraq on Friday, officials said. Operation Spear started in the pre-dawn hours in Anbar province to hunt for insurgents and foreign fighters. The province, which straddles the Syrian border, is where the military said it killed about 40 militants in operations in Karabilah on June 11. Officials fled but one guard said Bakiyev was not inside. Around 250 police and soliders in bullet-proof vests and wielding shields and truncheons stood outside but took no action. Security Council reform Tokyo (dpa) - Japanese Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, said Friday Tokyo would reject Washington's latest proposal concerning U.N. Security Council reform. "Japan cannot go along with this plan," Koizumi said. Japan favours an earlier reform proposal to expand the Security Council by six new permanent members, while the U.S. proposed to add Japan and at least one more country as permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. (Posted @ 11:35 PST) New Zealand seizes guns of Musharraf's bodyguards Wellington (dpa) – Five guns were seized from President Pervez Musharraf's personal bodyguards when he arrived at Auckland airport late Thursday night. The guards had been advised earlier that personal firearms were not allowed in New Zealand. "There was a misunderstanding by members of party as to the point where firearms would have been relinquished," a spokesman said. "They were under the impression that would have been at the hotel." The guns will be returned when the delegation flies out Sunday morning. (Posted @ 11:34 PST) U.S. soldier charged with murder in officers' deaths BAGHDAD, June 16 (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier has been charged with premeditated murder in the deaths of two U.S. army officers in Iraq this month, a military statement said on Thursday. An initial investigation indicated the officers were killed by a mortar round blast in Tikrit on June 7 but further examination showed the blast was "inconsistent with a mortar attack", it said. It gave no further details.
