KARACHI, June 5: City Nazim Niamatullah has said that facilities like X-ray, mammography, colour Doppler, MRI and CT scan would be provided to the citizens at the City Diagnostic Centre at economical rates. Speaking at the foundation-stone laying ceremony of the centre at the city government’s camp office, the nazim said he was not satisfied with the health facilities in the public sector.

He demanded that the federal and provincial governments should allocate at least five per cent of their budgets for the health sector, so that people belonging to the lower and middle classes could benefit.

He said the performance of government hospitals and health centres could be improved if officials of the department were appointed on merit and a system of check and balance was put in place.

He said the health sector was his top priority and the city government had allocated eight to 10 per cent of its budget to the sector every year. He said the allocations were the biggest for the sector in the country and in accordance with the recommendation of the World Health Organization.

Member of the project committee Dr Fayaz Alam said the city government had set a new tradition by converting its camp office into the centre.

He said tenders had been issued for the purchase of X-ray, ultrasound, mammography and colour Doppler machines, while work for renovation and alteration in the building would be executed within a week.

He said Rs25 million would be spent on the purchase of equipment and Rs22 million on the renovation and alteration work.

He said the MRI facility was not available in any government hospital in Sindh and Balochistan.

He said MRI service would be provided at the centre for Rs2,000, the charges for CT scan would be Rs500 and for colour Doppler test Rs200.

MORE PARKS: Niamatullah Khan inaugurated three parks in block 2, 4 and 14 of the Federal B. Area on Saturday evening.

Addressing the inauguration ceremonies of the Noorani Garden in block 2-D, Allama Iqbal Park in block 14 and Jogging Track in block 20, the nazim said that the city government along with union councils and town administration had made 94 parks in the Gulberg Town, which also included a model park.

He said that in order to make Karachi a beautiful and green city we had left no stone unturned.

The nazim said that according to the new local body system, the city government had always tried its best to solve the problems of the citizens, with honesty and efficiency.

He mentioned that the city government had made 300 parks in the metropolis. Town Nazim Farooq Niamatullah was also present.

KORANGI ROAD: The City Nazim, Niamatullah Khan, said that the construction work of Korangi 8000 Road for the Korangi Industrial Area would be started in this week.

He said that with the construction of this road, an old need of this area would be fulfilled besides helping in increasing the industrial activity in the future.

The nazim stated this in a ceremony held on Saturday at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI).

Speaking on the occasion, the city nazim said this road was being constructed with the financial support of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).

He further informed that this road would be constructed with the EPB’s Export Development Fund with a cost of Rs1.10 billion.

Expressing gratitude to the President Pervez Musharraf, he said the president had showed special interest in the construction of this road, which was the biggest project among the city government’s other uplift projects.

KATI Chairman Abdul Haseeb Khan said the construction of Korangi 8000 Road would not only benefit the industrial area but it would also prove helpful for country’s economic development.—PPI/APP
