Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states make US trafficking blacklist WASHINGTON, June 3 (AFP) - Saudi Arabia and three other close Gulf allies were added Friday to the US blacklist for trafficking in people, in a report that also highlighted a burgeoning use of slave children as camel jockeys. The critiques came in the State Department's fifth annual "Trafficking in Persons Report" which analyzed efforts in 150 countries to combat trafficking for forced labor, prostitution, military service and other purposes. "Trafficking in human beings is nothing less than a modern form of slavery," US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told a news conference in releasing the 256-page report.(Posted @ 23:53 PST)

Radio commentary team leave home after PTCL strike KINGSTON, (Jamaica) June 3 (APP): Radio Pakistan commentary team have to leave home Friday because of Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation Ltd (PTCL) strike. The commentary was aired smoothly from St.Vincent and St.Lucia where the first One-Day Internationals were played but during first Test in Barbados it was disrupted by PTCL because of gateway. Flight lands in Canada after false hijack signal WASHINGTON, June 3 (Reuters) - A Virgin Atlantic airplane that sent a false alarm about a hijacking landed safely in Canada on Friday after being diverted there under fighter escort, airline and Homeland Security officials said.Virgin Flight 45, en route to New York from London, was diverted over the Atlantic Ocean after the airplane's transponder emitted a signal indicating a possible hijacking, a U.S. Homeland Security official said.The Canadian Air Force scrambled two CF-18 fighters from Quebec to intercept the flight, said Canadian Air Force spokeswoman Lt. One killed, two injured in accidental Pakistan bag blast LAHORE, Pakistan, June 3 (AFP) - A man was killed and two other people were injured in eastern Pakistan Friday in a blast believed to have been caused by explosives in a bag the man was unwittingly carrying, police said.The blast occurred in Adorai village, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) northeast of Lahore, after the man hit an electric pole with the abandoned bag he found, local police official Zafar Ali Shah told AFP."The man identified as Nazir Ahmed, 55, was killed, while two passers-by were slightly injured," he said.(Posted @ 21:30 PST)

NASA gives go-ahead for mission to Mars WASHINGTON, June 3 (AFP) - NASA gave its approval for a 2007 mission to Mars in which a vehicle will probe for signs of water and life in the Red Planet's arctic zone, the US space agency said in a statement.As part of the 386-million-dollar mission, a vehicle known as "Phoenix" will be launched in August 2007 and should arrive on Mars in May 2008, NASA said.(Posted @ 20:20 PST)

APHC leaders for inclusion of Kashmiris in Indo-Pak dialogue Muzaffarabad, Pakistan (dpa) - Top leaders from Indian-occupied Kashmir, currently visiting Azad Kashmir, called on Friday for including Kashmiris in the ongoing peace process to make it "result-oriented and purposeful". "It is in the interest of both Pakistan and India to include Kashmiris in the composite dialogue in order to make the process irreversible," they told members of the legislative assembly of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. "We have brought with us concrete proposals for settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which we would like to share with the leadership in AJK and Pakistan," APHC chairman Mir Wazir Umar Farooq told the legislators. "I also invite AJK leaders to visit Srinagar to carry forward process of interaction among the leadership of the two Kashmirs," Farooq said.Professor Abdul Ghani Bhutt asked Islamabad and New Delhi not to deny the fundamental privileges of the Kashmiris who want an end to violence, insecurity, indignity and humiliation. 17 die in latest bout of Iraq violence BAGHDAD, June 3 (AFP) - Seventeen Iraqis died in the country's latest round of unchecked violence, sources said Friday. Five people, including a child and two Iraqi soldiers were killed in several attacks north of Baghdad. In Samarra, insurgents took on a police rapid reaction force in a firefight that killed the child and one other person. Ten Iraqis were killed and 12 wounded late Thursday in a suicide car bomb attack north of Baghdad, a US military source said. In southern Iraq, Shiite cleric Ali Abdel Hussein was killed by gunmen in Basra overnight, his son and a hospital source said. Turkman police General Sabah Bahlul Goralton was assassinated as he left Friday prayers in northern Kirkuk, police said. Three explosions from a mortar attack shook the capital around midday Friday, with a security source saying the shells had come from a predominantly Sunni area and that one had landed near the Lebanese embassy. No casualties were reported. Outside Kirkuk, two roadside bombs struck a US patrol early Friday, lightly wounding an unspecified number of soldiers and damaging two vehicles. Councillor killed in occupied Kashmir SRINAGAR, India, June 3 (AFP) - Municipal councillor Mohammad Ashraf was killed Friday in a residential street of Srinagar while on way to office. He was rushed to hospital but died on the way, police said. He belonged to the main opposition National Conference. So far, half-a-dozen candidates and councillors have been killed, police say. Five killed in suspected Taliban attacks in southern Afghanistan KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 3 (AFP) - Suspected Taliban Friday killed at least five people in four separate gun and explosives attacks in southern Afghanistan, officials said. A remote-controlled bomb killed a local militia commander in the provincial capital of Lashkargah in Helmand on Friday, Helmand's intelligence chief Amanullah Jan told AFP. Syria tested three missiles - one broke up over Turkey: report WASHINGTON, June 3 (APP/AFP) - Syria test fired three Scud missiles a week ago, one of which broke up over two Turkish villages causing no injuries, The New York Times said Friday quoting Israeli military officials. In Tel Aviv, the Israeli officials told the daily that the missle tests -- one older Scud B, with a range of 300 kilometers (185 miles) and two Scud D's with a range of 700 kilometers (435 mile) -- were part of a Syrian missile development project using North Korean technology.
