Secretary General Annan visits war-torn Darfur Khartoum (dpa) - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan visited Sudan's Darfur region Saturday, and heard firsthand accounts of how instability and human rights abuses continue in the region. The U.N. head first went to the Kalma refugee camp in southern Darfur, where more than a hundred thousand people are sheltering, and then travelled on to the town of Labado in the same region. World Bank to provide necessary assistance for priority areas during next three years ISLAMABAD, May 28 (APP): Pakistan and World Bank Saturday discussed the funding proposals, needs and priority areas for which funding will be required during the next three years under the Inductive Lending Programme. The discussions were held in a meeting between World Bank delegation led by its Country Director John Wall and Secretary Economic Affairs Division (EAD) Shuja Shah and other senior officials of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. The priority areas identified were second generation reforms, structural reforms, human development infrastructure including water security, energy security, transport, urban development and Khushal Pakistan. Blasts in occupied Kashmir injure at least 31 people, mostly civilians SRINAGAR, India, May 28 (AFP) - At least 31 people, mostly civilians, were injured in occupied Kashmir Saturday in two separate blasts aimed at security forces, police and witnesses said. Central Reserve Police Force personnel and 12 civilians were hurt when suspected militants detonated a car bomb on the Anantnag-Pahalgam road, 60 km south of Srinagar, as a paramilitary patrol was passing by. The attack was later claimed by Hizbul Mujahedin. In Srinagar's Dalgate commercial area, 12 civilians were wounded when a grenade lobbed by militants at a security force vehicle missed its target and fell among shoppers, police and witnesses said. Iran very anxious to get nuclear bomb: Musharraf BERLIN, May 28 (AFP) - Iran is very anxious to obtain a nuclear bomb, President Pervez Musharraf said in an interview to Germany's Der Spiegel weekly published Saturday, while stating his opposition to any preventive attack on Iran. Asked how to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear program, Musharraf said: "I do not know. They are very anxious to have the bomb." But a preventive war against Tehran would lead to "a disaster considering the current state of the world," he said. "It would provoke a rebellion in the Muslim world. Pakistan says abductor of Chinese still at large SHAKAI, Pakistan, May 28 (Reuters) - A former Guantanamo Bay inmate, Abdullah Mehsud, wanted for abducting two Chinese engineers in Pakistan remains at large and is holed up in a mountainous tribal region with other al Qaeda militants, the military said on Saturday. Major-General Niaz Khattak, commander of Pakistani forces in the South Waziristan area, told reporters about 100 foreign militants were hiding in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan, most of them in the neighbouring North Waziristan. Pakistan, India begin talks on Sir Creek boundary demarcation ISLAMABAD, May 28 (AFP) - Pakistani and Indian defence officials started a two-day meeting Saturday in a bid to settle a row over maritime boundaries in the Sir Creek marshlands that lie between the countries, officials said. The talks focused on a survey of the area, which falls between Pakistan's southern Sindh province and the Indian state of Gujrat, conducted by Pakistani and Indian teams early this year, a defence ministry official said. Many killed in several acts of violence in Iraq Baghdad, May 28 (Agencies) Joint U.S.-Iraqi forces killed two suspected insurgents and wounded five in Mahaweel, south of Baghdad. Gunmen also shot dead a former member of Kirkuk's city council, Naif Sabhan al-Jibouri, outside his home in Kirkuk. Two suicide attackers detonated car bombs in Sinjar, northwest of Mosul, killing at least five Iraqis and wounding 40. Seven people were killed, including three police officers, and 24 others were wounded in a suicide car bomb attack in Tikrit, north of Baghdad. A U.S. Marine was also declared dead during fighting in the town of Haditha, northwest of Baghdad. Four blasts rock Quetta Quetta, May 28 (Daily Star) Four bombs exploded here Saturday-two near a telephone exchange, one near the PID office and the fourth one at AG office - on Sariab Road, Quetta, the Karachi eveninger Star reported today. According to the daily Star the explosions were of high intensity; however no loss of life was reported. Death toll from twin bomb blasts in Indonesia rises to 20 JAKARTA, May 27 (AFP) - The death toll from two bomb explosions at a busy market place on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi Saturday rose to 20, with 40 injured, police said. Among the fatalities in the town of Tentena were an infant and a Christian cleric, according to Nyoman Agus, a police officer in the nearby town of Poso. U.S. examines blindness link in anti-impotence drugs Washington (dpa) - Three popular anti-impotence drugs have been linked to 43 reports of vision loss in patients, U.S. regulators said Friday. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is in talks with two manufacturers to add warnings to their drugs' labels, but the safety of erectile dysfunction drugs is not in question, FDA spokeswoman Susan Cruzan said. Hamas activist killed in Gaza explosion GAZA CITY, May 28 (AFP) - An activist of Hamas was found dead following an overnight explosion in the northern Gaza Strip, witnesses said early Saturday.Baker Hamada, 20, was apparently killed while handling an explosive charge in Beit Lahya, the witnesses said. Rice interrupted by enactment of Abu Ghraib abuse SAN FRANCISCO, May 27 (Reuters) - Demonstrators interrupted a speech by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday by recreating an image of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal in which a hooded prisoner stood with his arms outstretched attached to electric wires. Amid tight security at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall, three women and one man pulled on black hoods and cloaks and stood on their seats, acting out the scene caught in one of the photographs of abuse that undermined U.S. prestige abroad. Rice initially continued her speech on American foreign policy under President George W. Bush but paused when the protesters shouted "Stop the torture. Stop the killing. Saudi King Fahd doing well in hospital-agency RIYADH, May 28 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's King Fahd has been hospitalised but officials said he was doing well. Medical sources said the king had pneumonia and high fever. But the official SPA news agency quoted an official assaying: "King Fahd is well, thank God, and the medical tests he is undergoing are proceeding in a normal way." U.S. Navy commando cleared in Abu Ghraib case SAN DIEGO, May 27 (Reuters) - A U.S. military jury found Navy Lt. Andrew Ledford innocent on Friday of charges stemming from a 2003 incident in which his platoon beat a suspected Iraqi insurgent before handing him over to the CIA where he died in custody. Ledford's SEAL platoon seized al-Jamadi from an apartment and delivered him to CIA agents. He died a few hours later at AbuGhraib. Navy SEALs testified they kicked, punched and struck the hooded and handcuffed al-Jamadi. A picture of al-Jamadi's corpse was published widely,sowing his body packed in ice with a bandage below his right eye. Defense lawyer argued there was no evidence linking the Navy SEALs to al-Jamadi's death and that Ledford had been unaware of the beating. (Posted @ 09:25 PST)
