US can't win war on terrorism by itself: Rumsfeld WASHINGTON, May 25 (AFP) - US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Wednesday the United States cannot win the war on terrorism by military means alone or without the support of other countries. "Despite the successes, new terrorist leaders continue to step forward, and new networks emerge," he said in a speech prepared for delivery before a foreign affairs group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "Madrassas around the world continue to turn out new recruits from the ranks of the misguided and the misled," he said. Thousands rally in Pakistan against alleged desecration of Holy Quran KARACHI, May 25 (AFP) - Around 5,000 people rallied here Wednesday against the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran by US military interrogators at Guantanamo Bay prison, torching an effigy of US President George W. Egyptians vote on referendum day as protestors arrested Cairo (dpa) - Egyptians voted Wednesday in a referendum on a constitutional amendment as at least 40 members of the opposition were beaten and arrested for protesting the poll.Protestors from the Egyptian Movement for Change (Kefaya) described the vote on amending article 76 of the constitution to open the way for more than one candidate to run for president as a "theatrical farce".(Posted @ 19:30 PST)

India and northeast militant group sign ceasefire, disarmament accord NEW DELHI, May 25 (AFP) - The Indian government and an insurgent group from northeastern Assam state signed on Wednesday a one-year ceasefire pact that requires the rebels to disarm and live in camps, the Home Ministry said. The accord requires militants to end guerrilla attacks and soldiers to respect the ceasefire, the ministry said. Presidents launch strategic Caspian BTC pipeline BAKU, May 25 (AFP) - The presidents of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey turned valves on Wednesday, ceremonially opening a four-billion-dollar US-backed Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline that will deliver Caspian oil to the West without passing through Russia. India’s investigations into disappearances in occupied Kashmir not successful: Amnesty NEW DELHI, May 25 (AFP) – Indian authorities unsuccessfully investigated more than 8,000 disappearances since a separatist conflict erupted in occupied Kashmir in 1989, the Amnesty International’s 2005 annual report said on Wednesday. Moderate Kashmiri separatist leaders agree to visit Pakistan, others undecided SRINAGAR, India, May 25 (AFP) - "It has been decided that a high-level Hurriyat delegation will visit Pakistan and Azad Kashmir on June 2," the moderate Kashmiri separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said on Wednesday. But Shabir Shah Geelani and Yasin Malik, belonging to a hard-line faction of Hurriyat said that they were still undecided. Prisoners take two security guards hostage in Sukkur jail Islamabad (dpa) - Inmates took at least two security guards hostage in a Sukkur jail on Wednesday, officials and reports said. Up to 40 unruly inmates climbed over the rooftop of the jail to protest the confiscation of their mobile phones and cash taken by police officials during a weekly inspection. But one senior police official offered a different version, denying reports that any of the guards were held by the prisoners. Instead according to the police chief, Ghulam Hussain, the prisoners began protesting when the official vehicle that was to take them to court hearings did not arrive on time. Investigation of Holy Quran desecration assured: Jalil ISLAMABAD, May 25 (APP): Foreign Office Spokesman Jalil Abbas Jillani said that Pakistan was in touch with the US administration on the issue of desecration of the Holy Quran in Guantanamo Bay. U.S. leads global attack on human rights -Amnesty LONDON, May 25 (Reuters) - United States bears most responsibility for human rights violations worldwide, Amnesty International said on Wednesday. "When the most powerful country in the world thumbs its nose at the rule of law and human rights, it grants a licence to others to commit abuse with impunity," Secretary General Irene Khan said in the foreword to Amnesty International's 2005 annual report. President urges Pakistan-India dispute resolution for trade ties ISLAMABAD, May 25 (APP): President General Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday underscored the need for moving forward on disputes resolution between India and Pakistan for a mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation. Bomb attack kills six in Pakistan tribal area WANA, Pakistan, May 25 (AFP) - Six members of the same family were killed when a bomb planted by unidentified men destroyed their home in a remote Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border late Tuesday, officials said Wednesday. The attack occurred in Makin village in South Waziristan district and the victims included a woman, her two sons and three daughters, they said. "Some unknown men planted a powerful bomb close to the boundary wall of the house of local tribesman Resham Khan, killing his family," a local official told AFP. Indian sports minister and Bollywood hero dies BOMBAY, May 25 (Reuters) - India's sports minister and former Bollywood icon Sunil Dutt died on Wednesday after a heart attack, an aide said. He was 75. One of Dutt's greatest films was "Mother India", which was nominated for an Oscar.He undertook a peace march from Bombay to the northern city of Amritsar in Punjab in the 1980s when the state was reeling from a Sikh rebellion. About 1,000 US. troops launch new anti-insurgent offensive in western Iraq HADITHA, Iraq, May 25 (APP/AP) _ About 1,000 U.S. Marines, sailors and soldiers encircled this Euphrates River city in the troubled Anbar province before dawn on Wednesday, killing at least three insurgents after launching the second major anti-insurgent operation in this vast western region in less than a month. According to initial reports, three insurgents were killed during several fierce gun battles that broke out after U.S. forces entered this town before dawn, Marine Capt. Brunei monarch appoints crown prince as senior minister, revamps cabinet BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 25 (AFP) - Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in a televised address on late Tuesday appointed his son, Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, as senior minister in a cabinet revamp, triggering speculation about the succession timetable.
