ZOJILA PASS, May 20: Indian engineers reopened a highway in held Kashmir on Friday that is a lifeline to troops deployed in the frigid wastes of the world’s highest battlefield after months of snow clearing. The 435-kilometre Srinagar-Leh highway was cut off six months ago when avalanches and heavy snow blocked the route built after India and Pakistan fought their first war over disputed Kashmir in 1947-1948.
Military trucks rolled along the highway which winds through the 3,508-metre high Zojilla Pass after it was reopened to tens of thousands of Indian troops deployed in the disputed Himalayan territory.—AFP
