KARACHI, May 20: Various parts of the city, especially those belonging to Saddar and Jamshed towns, have once again started experiencing acute water shortage reportedly owing to re-opening of night tanker service from Muslimabad and LSR (Low Supply Reservoir).
The worst affected localities include Clifton’s Block 2, Lines Area, Khudadad Colony, parts of PECHS Block 2, Mehmoodabad, Manzoor Colony, Bohra Pir, Kharadar, Bhimpura, Ranchorre Lines, Haquani Chowk and Pakistan Chowk.
Residents of the affected localities complained whenever they brought the issue to the notice of the officials of the KWSB’s water distribution wing, they were told to contact the Board’s bulk water supply department’s superintending engineer and chief engineer but since both of them are nowadays abroad, they could not contact them.
Complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from the residents of North Nazimabad’s Block ‘P’ (Hussain D’ Silva Town), Malir, Khokarapar, Model Colony and different sectors of Baldia and Orangi townships, and Sector 5-F of North Karachi.
According to residents of the affected localities of both Saddar and Jamshed towns, water supply to their localities had improved to some extent following night tanker service from Muslimabad and LSR hydrants was suspended but their localities have been deprived of water once again.
Admitting that water supply position in several parts of both Saddar and Jamshed Towns has once again deteriorated, sources in the KWSB said the water shortage problem in the affected localities of both the towns has been created merely because the KWSB managing director’s orders pertaining to closure of night tanker service operation from LSR and Muslimabad hydrants were not being implemented in letter and spirit.
They said the managing director had taken the decision of suspending night tanker service from both the hydrants so that water being supplied to the hydrants from COD filter plant and Dumlottee Wells could be diverted to the pipelines hooked to the affected localities of both the towns.
Meanwhile, complaints of contaminated water supply have been received from Pak Colony and adjoining areas. The area people have urged the authorities to locate the fault.
SEWAGE LINE: A 33-inch dia sewerage line of Jamila Street pumping station which was damaged on Wednesday was repaired on Friday.
The KWSB staff repaired the bursting sewerage line and has cleared overflowed sewage from the adjoining roads through pumps.
Saddar Town’s municipal officer, Raza Hassan Abbas Rizvi, who visited the affected localities of Ranchorre Line, Ghas Mandi and Ramswami, to inspect the repairing work of the burst pipeline, directed the Town’s sewerage staff to clear the choked gutters and cover all the open manholes without any further delay.
