Lucky Winner triumphs

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, May 8: Rank outsider chestnut horse, Lucky Winner, proved worth his name, winning the feature event during the Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday. Ridden by Faisal Tahir, Lucky Winner collared front-runner Young Emperor inside the final 200m to win by five lengths with astonishing ease.

Fancied Baker Lard finished third another seven lengths behind with Pawan fourth, almost a distance further away.

Trained by Abdur Rashid, the winner clocked one min 18 2/5 secs over the 1300m distance.

The victory of Lucky Winner gave jockey Faisal Tahir a fine treble when he had earlier piloted home Green Hill and Weldon Shogun in the second and third race of the day.

A race earlier four-year-old chestnut colt, Sunny Kid, trained by Mubarik Ali underlined his improvement when getting the better of fancied Who Dares in a good final 100m duel to annex the supporting and sixth event over 1300m by a short-head in photo-finish.

The colt from Cannon Falls out-of-The Impress was ridden by jockey Aamar Parvaiz. Empire Maker finished third, half-a-length further back while Druree completed the frame.

Earlier End Play and Where Or When were withdrawn from the race leaving ten runners in the field.

Only two favourites, Easy Come Easy Go and Decent Proposal in the first and fifth race, obliged the punters when a card of seven events was decided in the afternoon.

The other events were won by horses available at long odds.
