KARACHI, May 1: Unrest is brewing again in the Lyari Town because of an acute water shortage, as residents of the affected areas have warned of agitation if remedial steps are not taken.
The hard-hit areas include major parts of Baghdadi and Shah Beg Lane union councils. While the shortage is chronic in the Ali Mohammad Mohalla and Edu Lane localities in the Shah Beg Lane Union Council.
Despite repeated claims by authorities, the Ali Mohammad Mohalla has not yet been connected with any main water supply line, and a decade old water shortage has been persisting, say the residents.
Over a decade has passed and residents of this area still continue to face numerous problems, living without basic amenities such as water, electricity and a proper drainage system.
Water shortage has become a very serious problem with water tankers being the only source for drinking water at present.
The water shortage became acute in the adjoining areas of Baghdadi’s Fida Husain Shaika Road where an alternative supply system was introduced on rotation basis some time ago.
However, residents complained that water supply to the locality had now become irregular, as the system was abruptly reversed, and they had to pass sleepless nights in wait for water through dried taps.
Expressing concern over the indifferent attitude of the concerned authorities, the affected people have threatened to take to the streets as a last resort if normal water supply is not restored immediately.
