South Africa dominate as Smith hits century
PORT OF SPAIN (Trinidad), April 10: Graeme Smith completed his ninth Test hundred to help South Africa reach 238 for four at lunch on the third day of the second cricket Test against West Indies here on Sunday.

At the interval, Smith was undefeated on 126 and Herschelle Gibbs was not out on six, after South Africa continued from their overnight position of 182 for three.

The left-handed Smith edged an out-swinging delivery from Dwayne Bravo between slip and gully to third man for a single to arrive at his landmark and has struck 15 fours from 273 balls in 6-and-a-half hours of batting.

For most of the morning period, cut short by a 15-minute break for rain, Smith and Monde Zondeki resisted the West Indies attack to complete a 42-run, fourth-wicket partnership.

Pedro Collins, armed with the second new ball, made the breakthrough for the West Indies however, when he completely bamboozled Zondeki and bowled him for 14 with a perfectly pitched in-swinger.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis will face ICC match referee Jeff Crowe at the end of the day for a disciplinary infraction committed on the previous day.

Kallis has been reported for showing dissent following his dismissal — adjudged lbw to Bravo for 39 — late on the second day.

On Saturday, South Africa made steady progress when Smith and A.B. de Villiers shared an enterprising opening stand of 70 that ended when De Villiers, who scored 33, drove a ball from fast bowler Reon King uppishly to Shivnarine Chanderpaul at short extra cover.

South Africa were 86 for two in the fifth over before tea when Bravo had Jacques Rudolph caught behind for eight.

Smith and Kallis batted conservatively together in their stand of 95 that endured until the fourth ball before the close when Bravo trapped Kallis in front.

WEST INDIES (1st Innings) 347 (B.C. Lara 196; M. Ntini 6-95).
