Amir dismisses Kindelan win
LIVERPOOL (England), April 9: Amir Khan insisted he’d seen nothing to frighten him after watching Olympic conqueror Mario Kindelan secure an easy win against Frankie Gavan during Cuba’s 7-1 victory over Great Britain in an amateur international meeting.
Amir, 18, was at ringside as the man who denied him gold at last year’s Olympic lightweight final in Athens comfortably dispatched Amateur Boxing Association champion Gavan 18-7.
Ever since that defeat in the Greek capital, Amir has been itching for a re-match with Kindelan amidst reports that the bout will be the Briton’s last as an amateur.
He had hoped to take on double Olympic champion Kindelan again on April 30 in his hometown of Bolton, north-west England, on April 30.
But earlier this week Cuban officials said that date was “impossible” although they did not rule out Amir-Kindelan II taking place sometime in May or June.
Amir, who did not compete at the ABAs after a row over ticket allocations, admitted it had been hard for him to watch Kindelan hand out a beating to 19-year-old Gavan.
“I was itching to get in the ring with him tonight because I think I would have given Kindelan a harder fight,” Amir said.
“It would be a different fight now to the one we had in Athens. I’ve come on so much from the Olympics - I’m faster and stronger and he is not in such good condition.”
Cuba’s victory was all the more impressive as the bulk of their first team - Kindelan apart - were competing in a multi-national tournament in the Czech Republic.
