589 Indian prisoners to be freed

ISLAMABAD, March 15: The government has issued release orders on Tuesday for 589 Indian prisoners as a gesture of goodwill towards New Delhi, an official statement said.

President Pervez Musharraf told Amarinder Singh, the visiting chief minister of Indian Punjab, that Pakistan had initiated the process to release Indian civilians whose nationality had been confirmed.

“India has so far confirmed the national status of 529 fishermen and 60 civilian prisoners detained in Pakistan,” a Foreign Ministry statement said. “The Ministry of Interior has issued the release order concerning these prisoners,” it said.—Reuters
