KARACHI: Sindh govt not seeking funds for LG projects

KARACHI, Feb 27: Despite several reminders the Sindh government did not raise the demand nor proposed any project of the local government to be funded by the federal government from its fund for extending grant
to the provincial governments for this purpose.
This was stated by Federal Minister for Local Government Justice (retd) Razak Thaeem while addressing councillors at the Municipal Training and Research Institute (MTRI) here on Sunday.
The federal minister said that several reminders were sent to Sindh in this connection but no demand was received for the fund which was at his disposal. He said that he would request the provincial planning minister to recommend some projects to him so that he could ask the federal government to release the required fund.
Expressing concern over Sindh government's attitude the minister said it was surprising why the provincial government was not acting like Balochistan and others for securing funds for the projects to be implemented by the local government.
CERTIFICATE DISTRIBUTION: Government will introduce necessary amendments in the local government ordinance before the commencement of the second phase of the system in August this year, adds APP.
He was speaking at the certificate awarding ceremony of a training course organized by the Municipal Training and Research Institute. He said that the local government system was working very well all over the country and elected representatives including councillors and nazims and naib nazims were working for the welfare of the people.
The minister underlined the need for the training of elected people and functionaries of the said system to further improve their performance. The minister also responded to queries and issues raised by the participants about the existing LG system and emphasized on sustainable development at grassroots level through the devolution of power.
Later, the minister gave away certificates to the successful participants of course. MTRI Principal Mohammad Afzal Arain highlighted the aims and objectives of the training course. The course was participated by 35 district government functionaries, councillors, nazims and naib nazims.
