At least 30 killed, 300 injured in mosque fire in Teheran: TEHERAN, Feb 14: At least 30 people were killed when parts of a famous mosque were engulfed by flames in downtown Teheran today, the students' news agency ISNA reported. ISNA quoted a Teheran coroner's office who confirmed a death toll of 30. At least 300 people were injured and some were in a critical condition with severe burns, the report said. Reports on the extent of damage were conflicting as police would not allow reporters to approach the Ark mosque. According to a Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa photographer at the scene of the fire, the building has not collapsed entirely, but major parts including the roof, have been destroyed. Smoke enshrouds northern Iraqi city after pipeline attacks: KIRKUK, Feb 14: Iraq's northern city of Kirkuk lay under a thick pall of smoke today after insurgent attacks on oil and gas infrastructure. According to the interim Iraqi government, persistent insurgent attacks on the country's oil resources have caused losses of between seven and eight billion dollars in much-needed oil export revenue. (AFP) (Posted @ 11:10 PST) North Korea not yet a nuclear weapons state: Seoul - SEOUL, Feb 14: North Korea's declaration that it possesses nuclear weapons does not make it a nuclear weapons state, South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said today. North Korea declared for the first time on Thursday that it possessed nuclear weapons and said it was pulling out of six-party talks in the face of what it called U.S. hostility. "We see it as a claim to own nuclear weapons, not an official statement of being a nuclear weapons state," Chung told parliament. (Reuters) (Posted @ 10:35 PST) Nepali king appoints ex-PMs as loyalist deputies: KATHMANDU, Feb 14: Nepali King Gyanendra named two former royalist prime ministers as deputies of his ruling council, state radio said today, in a move seen as further tightening his grip on power. Gyanendra sacked the government this month, blaming it for failing to tackle a Maoist revolt. He assumed direct charge, setting aside multi-party democracy that was introduced in 1990. Radio Nepal said Tulsi Giri and Kirti Nidhi Bista, who were both prime ministers in the 1960s and 1970s, during absolute monarchy, were named deputy chairmen of a council of ministers -- already packed with royalists -- headed by King Gyanendra. Tensions mount in Bangladesh as opposition enforces shutdown: DHAKA, Feb 14: Political tensions mounted in Bangladesh today as violence on the streets marked the start of an opposition sponsored two-day general strike, leaving at least 14 people injured and causing widespread damage to property, officials said. Witnesses said seven buses and several private cars were set on fire in Dhaka.
