HYDERABAD: Shortage may cause water contamination

HYDERABAD, Feb 12: The chief engineer of the Kotri barrage, Mr Manzoor Shaikh, has advised HDA and WASA authorities to adopt precautionary measures in treatment of drinking water being supplied to people of Hyderabad because there is less water at the barrage.

In a statement issued to the press on Saturday, he warned that Indus river water coming from Sukkur barrage was being mixed up with 'regenerated water'.

"It is natural phenomenon and beyond human control" he said.

He said the Sukkur barrage downstream discharge was only 2,000 cusecs which might be reduced further.

He said quantum of water required for lifting by the HDA at the Kotri barrage would be available.

He said the HDA management had been advised to check quality of water daily and treat it properly before supplying for human consumption.

Some two million residents of the city use the river water for drinking.

SECTION 144: The district nazim has imposed a ban under section 144 CrPC on carrying weapons, publishing of provocative material, provocative speeches which may cause disturbance in peace and create hatred in the masses. The order will be enforced with effect from Feb 14 to 20 (full days) throughout the district.

ASRC: The Army Selection and Recruitment Centre has announced its mobile schedule for registration and selection for recruitment in the Pakistan Army in February.

The mobile team will be available at the Khipro Town Committee on Feb 22, at the Samaro Town Committee on Feb 23 and at the Umerkot Town Committee on Feb 24.

BISE: The controller of examinations of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education has announced that the SSC annual examination 2005 will commence from April 5 and HSC annual examination 2005 with effect from May 17.
