Three people killed in tribal election row: ISLAMABAD, Feb 08: Three people were killed and four injured in a gunfight at a local election campaign meeting in northwestern tribal zone today, officials said. The clash took place in Wana. Faridullah Khan Wazir, a local leader who had convened the council election meeting, told AFP the firefight between rival groups killed a man and his son as well as a passer-by. "We are convening a jirga to prevent further incidents of this kind," he said. (AFP) (Posted @ 23:55 PST) Four suspected bombers arrested in Karachi: KARACHI, Feb 08: Police today said they averted an imminent terrorist act in Karachi by arresting four militants there. The deputy chief of the region's Central Investigation Department (CID) Manzoor Mughal told reporters the four suspects were arrested in the Rati Line area while waiting for three other companions. Authorities believe they were members of two outlawed militant groups, Harkatul Mujahideen al-Almi and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, and were planning to carry out a terrorist attack somewhere in Karachi. Iraqi official escapes assassination attack, sons killed: CAIRO, Feb 08: Mithal al-Alousi, head of the Iraqi Democratic Nation Party, escaped an assassination attempt today in an attack in Baghdad, al-Arabiya news channel reported. The attack, however, killed two of Alousi's sons, aged 22 and 30, the channel said. The channel said armed men with machine guns fired at the car Alousi and his two sons were in. (DPA) (Posted @ 15:05 PST) Hamas says not bound by Palestinian ceasefire: GAZA CITY, Feb 08: Hamas said today that it was not bound by the ceasefire announced by Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas at a Middle East peace summit in Egypt. Abbas's declaration "expresses only the position of the Palestinian Authority. It does not express the position of the Palestinian movements," said Hamas spokesman Mushir al-Masri. In Beirut, another Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdaneh said the ceasefire pledge "does not commit the Palestinian resistance." 20 killed in Nigerian road crash: LAGOS, Feb 08: Twenty people were killed and seven others sustained serious injuries when a passenger bus collided with another vehicle on a road in northern Nigeria's Kaduna State, police said today. (AFP) (Posted @ 15:05 PST) Nepali army launches air strikes against rebels: KATHMANDU, Feb 08: Nepali troops backed by helicopters have attacked Maoist camps in the jungles in the west of the country, as part of a new offensive against the rebels launched after the king seized power a week ago. Dozens of Maoists have been killed in the strikes on training camps and shelters near the western city of Nepalgunj, newspapers reported today.
