Bad luck, controversial decisions led to defeat: Minister

ISLAMABAD, Feb 7: Bad luck, coupled with controversial umpiring decisions, led to Pakistan's defeat in the tri-series final against Australia, Federal Minister for Culture and Sports Muhammad Ajmal Khan observed on Monday.

"(Lady) luck did not smile on Pakistan team and due to some controversial decisions of Australian empire, they did not claim victory against Australia in the best-of-three finals," he was quoted as saying in an official statement.

Calling for an energetic captain, the minister said he had spoken to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mr.Shaharyar M. Khan about the falling standard of the team, pledging that inquiry would be conducted into allegations of indiscipline.

"Although Pakistan cricket team's performance in Test matches during the Australian tour is below satisfaction, yet they performed better in the one-day series," the minister said.

"In spite of better performance in the one day series, there are still lot of loopholes and gray areas, which must be plugged immediately. Pakistan team's batting does not click and also there is lack of discipline and team spirit," he said.

The federal minister also expressed disappointment with captaincy, calling for new and energetic skipper who "has the qualities of leadership and knows how to infuse fighting spirit in the team."

He said he was as concerned as other Pakistanis and was thinking seriously as to how to cover the gray areas in the team.

The minister said he had already talked with Shaharyar M. Khan, chairman of PCB, about the falling standard of the team. "I hope, we will sort out the matter," he added.

About the alleged indiscipline and irresponsible attitude of some players, he said "nobody was above law and we would investigate the matter to dig out the truth. After that we will take action against the culprits accordingly."

Pakistan lost the three-Test series 3-0 and the tri-nation finals 2-0.-APP
