KARACHI: Govt flayed for filing case against newsmen

KARACHI, Feb 7: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal on Monday condemned filing of a case against journalists of Urdu newspaper and termed it an attack on freedom of press.

MMA legislators Mohammad Hussain Mehanti, Abdul Sattar Afghani, Mohammad Laeeq Khan, Nasarullah Khan Shajee, Hameedullah Khan and Younus Barai demanded withdrawal of case against Afzal Nadeem Dogar and Nazeer Laghari and asked responsible national institutions to take notice over such threats to newsmen.

They also criticized issuance of legal notice to journalist Saleem Shahzad of English daily and termed it part of state terrorism and attempt to threaten the newsmen. They said that use of state machinery, resources and immoral tactics could not restrain journalists from writing the truth.

Meanwhile, Asif Ali Zardari has also condemned the registration of FIR and asked the government to withdraw it forthwith.

The PPP leader said case against the newsmen seemed a part of conspiracy against the freedom of press involving some overt and convert allies of the government. - PPI
