Government denies nuke tech sale to Arab states: ISLAMABAD/HONG KONG, Feb 07: Government denied today that the father of its atomic bomb sold nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries after Time magazine reported that the United States was investigating the matter. Abdul Qadeer Khan admitted last year to leaking nuclear secrets to Iran, Libya and North Korea, fuelling global fears about nuclear proliferation and technology transfers to terrorist groups. The latest edition of Time said U.S. officials were investigating whether Khan also sold sensitive technology to Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed dismissed the report as "baseless and sensationalised". "As far as Iran, Libya and North Korea are concerned, there was an admission. But there is no truth as far as Saudi Arabia and other countries are concerned," the minister told Reuters.    (Reuters) (Posted @ 15:45 PST)

Tribal renegades threaten to blow up oil field: MULTAN, Feb 07: A rebel tribal group has threatened to blow up a key oil field, as officials said they had tightened security around a nuclear plant. The shadowy Baluchistan Liberation Army said today it would strike the oil and gas installation at Dhodak . It marks an apparent attempt by the group to spread violence beyond the southwestern province of Baluchistan -- where it was blamed for an attack on a gas plant last month which killed eight people -- into other areas. Local officials said they had taken steps to protect national assets including the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission facility at Dera Ghazi Khan, some 112 kilometers east of Dhodak. "We have made all necessary arrangements for the security of sensitive areas like Dhodak gas field, atomic energy station, bridges and railway track in Dera Ghazi Khan district," district police chief Salman Chaudhry told AFP.    (AFP) (Posted @ 22:25 PST)
