Speaking on ITV's Jonathan Dimbleby programme, the EU's high representative for foreign and security policy said that such unilateral action would be counter-productive. Asked about US Vice President Dick Cheney's warning last month that Israel might attack Iran's nuclear facilities without warning, Solana said: "I think that would be something I would not like to see taking place. That would be a mistake. That will complicate enormously the situation." (AFP) (Posted @ 13:40 PST)

The military immediately named his son as his successor. Worldwide, only Cuba's Fidel Castro has held power longer. Eyadema, who claimed sole control in 1967 after aiding in what was sub-Saharan Africa's first postcolonial coup four years earlier, suffered a heart attack in his southeastern hometown of Piya early Saturday, and died on the way to Europe for treatment, officials said. Hours later, Togo's military high command said Eyadema's 39-year-old son, Faure Gnassingbe, was the West African nation's new president. The constitution calls for that power to go to the speaker of parliament, but the military said he was out of the country and it was necessary ``to avoid a ``total vacuum of power.'' State television showed images of military leaders, including army chief of defense staff Gen. Zakari Nandja, swearing an oath of allegiance to Gnassingbe, who was the minister of mines and communication. Family names are often reversed in Africa. Prime Minister Koffi Sama called upon security forces to keep law and order. He also announced all land borders and air space in the nation of 5.5 million people had been closed, along with the international airport in the capital, Lome. ``The armed forces and police must help preserve peace and national security,'' Sama said on state radio. ``All the country's political, social, religious leaders must avoid any act likely to plunge the country into anarchy and confusion.'' Aide to Mexican President Arrested in Gang Link: MEXICO CITY, Feb 06: In the latest twist in Mexico's war on drug trafficking, a senior member of President Vicente Fox's staff has been arrested over possible links with a drugs gang, Mexico's attorney general said . Nahum Acosta, a senior member of Fox's secretary's office, was arrested on suspicion of leaking information about the president's activities to a criminal gang linked to drug smuggling, Attorney General Rafael Macedo said. "At this time, I can refer to a criminal organization, in which we are sure who his link was. It's an organization linked to drug trafficking," Macedo told reporters on the sidelines of an official event, declining to name the organization. "We have information and elements that lead to a specific criminal organization; I'm not going to name it at this time," he said.Acosta had been working since 2001 as a senior member of the team that organizes Fox's official trips, Macedo said, adding there was no indication anybody else in the president's office was involved in misconduct. While there was no security risk to Fox, it was worrying that a crime gang could have infiltrated a presidential institution, he said. "It's clear that a person carrying out the job this person did could have -- and he is now in custody -- could have put the president's physical integrity at risk," Macedo said.
