Musharraf says wants Kashmiris to attend India talks: MUZAFFARABAD, Feb 05: President Pervez Musharraf called today for Kashmiri leaders to be involved in talks with India to resolve their main dispute over Kashmir .Musharraf said the Himalayan region was of "vital national interest" to Pakistan and would never compromise on this point. "Pakistan will accept only that solution of the Kashmir problem which is according to the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiris," he said in a message to legislators of Pakistan-ruled Kashmir. Musharraf's message was read out to the legislative assembly because rains had prevented him from flying to the region to attend the annual Kashmir Solidarity Day. He said Pakistan had told India as well as the international community that the peace process between the nuclear-armed rivals could not move forward without the settlement of the Kashmir dispute and involvement of Kashmiris in the dialogue process.    (Guardian) (Posted @ 21:55 PST)

Iran, Pak may ink gas export deal without India: Official - TEHRAN, Feb 05: Iran and Pakistan may not wait for an uncertain India to join a deal to buy Iranian gas via a trans-Pakistan pipeline, Iran's deputy oil minister for international affairs was quoted today as saying. "Iran and Pakistan are ready to separately sign a deal for Iranian gas exports, as the Indians are still doubting on a pipeline supply via Pakistan," Hadi Nejad-Hosseinian said in the press. Talks on setting up a pipeline from Iran to India have still not borne fruit due to territorial conflict between India and Pakistan. Despite repeated assurances from Pakistan, India hesitates to give a go-ahead to the deal. The minister said "terms of cooperation with Pakistan should be in a way to provide adequate assurance to India about transportation of gas through Pakistan land." Nejad-Hosseinian said the pipeline talks had progressed, adding that "because of the day-by-day increasing gas demand of these two countries, one single pipeline would not be sufficient to supply gas and the demand might necessitate two pipelines."    (AFP) (Posted @ 21:55 PST)

Two Suspects Killed in Egypt Clashes : CAIRO, Feb 05: Police killed two suspected militants today wanted in last year's Sinai bombings following clashes in Egypt's Sinai peninsula desert, the Interior Ministry said. Police had been hunting for the two suspects for two days when they clashed with them in a mountainous region on Sinai's western coast near Ras Sudr, the ministry said. A policeman was also killed and several wounded in the fighting, it said. One of the slain men was identified as Hammad Gaman Gomah Tarabeen, a Bedouin tribesman suspected of involvement in the Oct. 7 bombings of Sinai tourist resorts. The other could not be identified because of the severity of his injuries. The hunt was launched after fighting on Tuesday in the same area that killed Mohammed Abdel Rahman Badawi, identified as another suspect in the Taba Hilton and Ras Shitan resort bombings that left 34 people dead. A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said some 600 security forces are still searching the area for at least three other suspects.    (Guardian) (Posted @ 22:25 PST)

Nepal may release politicians - media : KATHMANDU, Feb 5: Nepal's king could begin releasing arrested political leaders soon, local media reported, as the new government said it was setting up a panel to fight corruption. Chief army spokesman Brigadier General Dipak Gurung said some political leaders -- hundreds have been jailed or placed under house arrest around the country -- could be released soon, the Kathmandu Post reported. At the same time, authorities continued rounding up activists, including sacked prime minister Sher Bahadu Deuba's chief spokesman, Minendra Rijal, who had been one of the few political leaders left free to speak to reporters. To stifle dissent and avoid protests, Gyanendra has cut all public phone lines within the Hindu kingdom and with the outside world. The media have also been banned from dissent. The communications blackout makes it impossible to find out what is happening in Kathmandu and in the largely isolated rural areas.    (Reuters) (Posted @ 10:10 PST)
