ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: The People's Party Parliamentarians (PPP) has submitted an adjournment motion to the National Assembly Secretariat, seeking discussion on increase in number of road accidents on various highways in the country.

According to parliamentary secretary of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy, Izhar Amrohvi, PPP President Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Secretary General Raja Pervez Ashraf have submitted the adjournment motion under Rule 92 of the Rules and Procedure for Conduct of Business in the National Assembly-1992.

The motion states that it is a matter of shock that traffic on highways is not being controlled though a full-fledged ministry and an authority are working for this purpose.

Recently, 26 people including two children and four women were killed in a head-on collision between a passenger wagon and a coach in Begari area some 20 kilometres from Jacobabad. This is not the only accident which has resulted into the loss of precious lives, it added.

The motion said several accidents were reported daily but the government had failed to check and take precautionary measures throughout the country. The situation is becoming more and more grave, causing a serious concern amongst the general public, it added.

The matter is of serious nature and needs discussion on the floor of the house adjourning its normal proceedings, the motion said. Meanwhile, five opposition members have also submitted an adjournment motion to the Senate Secretariat seeking discussion on the law and order situation in the country with reference to the recent terrorist act in which a religious scholar, Maulana Haroon Qasmi, was gunned down in Karachi.

The motion, filed under Rule 74 of the Rules and Procedure for Conduct of Business in the Senate-1988, has been signed by opposition leader Mian Raza Rabbani, MMA Senator Prof Khurshid Ahmed, PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar and PPP senators Sardar Abdul Latif Khosa and Dr Safdar Abbasi.

It may be mentioned that the opposition members have already submitted four adjournment motions to the Senate to discuss the worsening law and order situation in the country.

Mr Amrohvi said that the opposition members would force the treasury members to hold a debate on the law and order situation in the Senate session starting from Wednesday (today).
