Government arrests 43 Indian fishermen for violating territorial waters: KARACHI, Jan 29: Government authorities today arrested 43 Indians for illegally fishing in its territorial waters, officials said. "We have arrested 43 Indian fishermen and seized their seven boats for violating our maritime zone," Pakistan's Maritime Security Agency spokesman Khawar Hasan Khan said. (AFP) (Posted @ 23:40 PST) Nine Afghan policemen killed in mine blast near Kandhar: KABUL, Jan 29: Nine Afghan policemen were killed and another injured when a landmine planted by suspected insurgents exploded under their vehicle, the interior ministry said. The attack happened in Kandahar. "A group of Afghan soldiers and border policemen were travelling from Spin Boldak to Kandahar and a mine exploded. Nine police officers were killed", Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal told AFP today. "One police officer was (also) injured and the vehicle was entirely destroyed", he said, adding that the landmine was planted on the road and was "remote controlled". A Taliban spokesman told Afghan Islamic Press that the attack was carried out by Taliban. Iraq polling stations under attack : IRAQ, Jan 29: A suicide bomber attacked a police station today in a Kurdish town, killing seventeen people, and insurgents blasted polling places in several cities on the eve of landmark elections in which the president acknowledged many Iraqis will not vote because of fears for their lives. In Baghdad, bursts of heavy machine gun fire rattled through central districts at midday, and several heavy explosions shook the downtown area in the afternoon. Iraqi police and soldiers set up checkpoints through streets largely devoid of traffic as the nation battened down for the vote, with a nighttime curfew imposed across the country and the borders sealed. Insurgents blasted polling places in at least eight cities today and central Baghdad shook with shelling and heavy machine gun fire. American fighter jets roared through the skies in a show of force and buzzing US military helicopters dotted the skyline. (Reuters/Guardian) (Posted @ 21:50 PST) Israeli defense chief tells French parliament Iran at point of nuclear no-return: PARIS, Jan 29: Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has told French lawmakers that Iran is at "the point of no-return" on building nuclear weapons, according to a transcript of his remarks to the National Assembly made public. Mofaz, who warned openly in London this week that Iran would not be permitted to build a nuclear bomb, has in the past said that Israel has operational plans in place for a strike against Iranian targets. Mofaz told the French National Assembly's defense commission that "he ardently hoped that a recourse to military action would not be necessary" in Iran, according the transcript. But he said that to avoid this, there would have to be careful inspections aimed at removing any ambiguity about the existence of a military nuclear project. (AFP) (Posted @ 10:00 PST) Funeral for deposed Chinese leader Zhao ends: BEIJING, Jan 29: The funeral of purged Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang held in Beijing today has ended, a relative said. The funeral, held in western Beijing's Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery, ended around 11 am (0300 GMT) after Zhao's body had been cremated, his nephew told AFP, citing information from one of the deposed leader's sons. "They just cremated his body. The whole thing is over," said the nephew. The ceremony lasted for about three hours under tight government restrictions and heavy security. (APP) (Posted @ 10:00 PST)
