World bank cautions Pakistan: ISLAMABAD, Jan 25: The world Bank experts have cautioned Pakistan about its decision to seek the bank's arbitration over Baghliar Dam project. According to a radio report the world bank experts said that the issue could lead to a prolonged and complicated legal wrangle. The council of the international law group of the world bank in a presentation said the Indus water treaty has not assigned it the role of a grant or nor empovered it with an enforcement mechanism. According to the bank's expert the reference of arbitration could open Pandora box. (PPI) (Posted @ 13:30 PST) Government hands key Al-Qaeda suspect to US: ISLAMABAD, Jan 25: Government has given US officials custody of a key Al-Qaeda figure wanted for the 1998 bombing of American embassies in East Africa and the suspect has been flown out of the country, officials said today. Tanzanian Ahmad Khalfan Ghailani was arrested in a raid in Gujrat in July last year and was handed over to the US last month, according to a security official. "Ghailani has been handed over to US custody because he wasn't wanted in any crime over here," the Pakistani official, who declined to be identified, told AFP. He did not give any further details. SHC reserves order in detention petition of doctor brothers: KARACHI, Jan 25: A division bench of Sindh High Court today reserved order on detention petition of Dr. Akmal Waheed and Dr. Arshad Waheed after viewing video evidence against them in chamber, provided by Sindh government. SHC's division bench comprising Justice Ataur Rehman and Justice Zia Pervez after conclusion of arguments in case desired to see video evidence against them as provincial government expressed willingness to show it in court's chamber if court feel important to view evidence to reach the conclusion. NZ defence force to stay extra year in Afghanistan: WELLINGTON, Jan 25: A New Zealand defence force team will stay in Afghanistan for an extra year to help with security and reconstruction, Prime Minister Helen Clark said today. The deployment of the 120-strong provincial reconstruction team in the central province of Bamiyan has been extended for a further 12 months until September 2006. Taiwan names Kaohsiung mayor new premier: TAIPEI, Jan 25: Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian named a senior member of his pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, Kaohsiung Mayor Frank Hsieh, as premier today, replacing Yu Shyi-kun. "Mayor Hsieh is the best choice for opening discussions and negotiations to create a stable new environment," Chen told a news conference. (Reuters) (Posted @ 10:00 PST) More than 300 Indians die, 200 hurt in temple stampede: SATARA, Jan 25: More than 300 Hindu pilgrims were trampled to death and 200 injured in a stampede at a religious festival in western India. Additional Director General of Police V.N. Deshmukh said most of the dead were women and children who were jammed into a hill-top temple and narrow access road. "Over 300 were killed and four buses full of injured people have been sent to various local hospitals in the district of Satara," Deshmukh in Bombay told AFP . He warned the death and injury toll was expected to go up as the bodies of the dead and injured arrived at hospitals in Satara district. Deshmukh said the crush was triggered by a clash between pilgrims and a few shopkeepers that was followed by a gas cylinder blast which caused more panic.
