Government now accuses India of violating ceasefire: ISLAMABAD, Jan 24: Government today accused India of violating a 14-month ceasefire in Kashmir, days after New Delhi twice accused its nuclear rival of launching mortar shells into its territory. Foreign Ministry spokesman Masood Khan said small arms fire came on Friday from the Indian side of the Line of Control -- the de facto border splitting the disputed Himalayan region into Indian and Pakistani-run areas.    (AFP) (Posted @ 16:35 PST)

Iraqi Forces Seize Top Zarqawi Aide: BAGHDAD, Jan 24: Iraqi forces have captured one of al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's top bomb-makers in Iraq, the prime minister's spokesman said today. Sami Mohammed al-Jafi, known as Abu Omar al-Kurdi, is accused of being behind some 32 car bombings since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, he said. Kurdi was arrested on Jan. 15 but his capture was announced now, just a week before Iraq's landmark elections in which Prime Minister Iyad Allawi is running on a list that promises to bring security to beleaguered Iraqis. "Kurdi has confessed to some 75 percent of the car bombs that were used for attacks in Baghdad since March 2003 and to making the explosives used in the attack on the Jordanian embassy in August 2003," spokesman Thair al-Naqib said. "Kurdi also confirmed he was responsible for some of the bloody attacks on the police."    (Reuters) (Updated @ 19:50 PST)

Saddam's Lawyer Reportedly in Hiding : AMMAN, Jan 24: An Iraqi lawyer on Saddam Hussein's defense team has received several death threats in the last three weeks and has gone into hiding, the chief defense attorney for the deposed Iraqi leader said today. Khalil al-Duleimi, one of 25 attorneys representing Saddam, told other lawyers on the team that the threats followed his Dec. 16 meeting with the ousted Iraqi leader, according to chief defense attorney Ziad al-Khasawneh. Saddam was arraigned in a Baghdad court in July 2004 on charges of war crimes and genocide. He is awaiting trial before a special Iraqi tribunal. Al-Duleimi claimed that several messages were delivered to his home warning that "suicide cells had been formed specifically to liquidate him so that he would set an example to all other attorneys who have volunteered to defend President Saddam," al-Khasawneh said. Al-Duleimi feared for the safety of himself and his family, so he went into hiding, al-Khasawneh said. Saddam's legal team regards the interim Iraqi government as an "illegitimate" body installed by the United States following what they say was an illegal war aimed to control the country's oil wealth. Al-Duleimi met with the ousted dictator in a Dec. 16 meeting that lasted more than four hours — the first time Saddam met with a member of his Jordan-based legal team. Iraqi interim President Ghazi al-Yawer said last week the trial of Saddam and his 11 top lieutenants could begin shortly after general elections. However, some U.S. and Iraqi officials have said preparations for prosecuting the former regime's top officials will take months.    (AP/AFP) (Posted @ 23:30 PST)

Israel Resumes Building West Bank Barrier Segment: JERUSALEM, Jan 24: Israel resumed building one of the most controversial parts of its West Bank barrier, deep in occupied land, in a move Palestinians said today clouded new President Mahmoud Abbas's efforts to revive peacemaking. Israel's attorney-general approved construction of the 4-km (2.5 mile) segment along a new route near the large Jewish settlement of Ariel after residents of the adjacent Palestinian village of Salfit petitioned a court against land expropriation. "How we are going to convince our people and factions that we are trying to end Israeli occupation while Israel is imposing facts on the ground," Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat said. "This will have a deep and negative impact on our efforts to reach a cease-fire." The International Court of Justice has said it is illegal to construct the network of razor wire-tipped electronic fences and concrete walls on occupied land. Palestinians call the project a land grab aimed at denying them a viable state. An Israeli court had ordered work on the barrier around the Ariel enclave halted last June after the appeal was filed and then asked the sides to resolve the issue through negotiations. Changes were subsequently made to the route -- one of the most disputed because it dips deep into occupied territory -- although Salfit's mayor denied today reaching any deal with Israeli authorities.    (Reuters) (Posted @ 23:40 PST)

Taiwan cabinet resigns to pave way for reshuffle: TAIPEI, Jan 24: Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's cabinet resigned en masse today to pave the way for a reshuffle after his pro-independence party was defeated in legislative elections last month. Chen is expected to name Frank Hsieh, mayor of Taiwan's port city of Kaohsiung and a heavyweight in his Democratic Progressive Party, as premier, replacing Yu Shyi-kun who resigned with the rest of the cabinet. The reshuffle is expected to herald little change in policy, with the ministers of defence, foreign affairs and of the Mainland Affairs Council which formulates policies towards China retaining their jobs, media reports said.    (Reuters) (Posted @ 10:00 PST)

Top Indian opposition politician gunned down, triggering riots: HYDERABAD, Jan 24: A top opposition politician was gunned down in southern India, setting off riots in which dozens of buses and government buildings were burnt and destroyed, police said. Former guerrilla leader Paritala Ravi was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in front of his party office in Anantapur town. "He was attacked as he was coming out of the TDP office in Anantapur town. After the shooting the unidentified assailants lobbed home-made grenades, creating confusion among his security guards," Swaranjit Sen, police chief of Andhra Pradesh, told AFP. "The attackers then escaped on a scooter," he added. A member of Ravi's police security team and one of his friends were also killed in the attack. Ravi, from the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP), had his own private militia in common with many other high-profile Indian politicians. Sen said police fired in the air in two districts to disperse rioting activists of the opposition TDP, who blamed the killing on its main political rivals, the ruling Congress Party. "As a preacution we have clamped orders preventing the congregation of crowds in six to seven sensitive towns to prevent outbreaks of further violence," said Sen. The TDP has called for a state-wide general strike on Tuesday to protest the killing. "This is part of a systematic plan by the ruling Congress Party to eliminate prominent leaders of the opposition and create a fear psychosis in the minds of our carders," TDP chief and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu told AFP.    (AFP) (Posted @ 23:40 PST)
