KARACHI, Jan 20: At least 1,100 houses in different localities of Orangi Town's Union Council No 9 have been getting contaminated for the last two couple of months.

The localities which have been continuously getting polluted water include Orangi Town's Sector 11 1/2 (Pakistan Bazaar), Junaid Nagar and Benazir Colony.

Attributing the cause of contaminated water being supplied to the residents of Orangi Town's Sector 11 1/2 to a leaking pipeline near Pakistan Bazaar, said Orangi Town's UC-9 Nazim, Shehnaz Aftab. She further stated that sewage had been seeping into the leaking pipeline.

Similarly, a number of pipelines which are supplying water to Junaid Nagar and Benazir Colony and are passing through Pakistan Bazaar, Discor Mor pumping station, Islam Chowk and near Orangi Town's old police station have been leaking since long, she added.

She said although the KWSB's executive engineer concerned and other senior officials had been repeatedly been apprised about the leaking pipelines, none of them have, so far, taken measures to repair them.

The Nazim said that leaking pipelines have also become a permanent source of nuisance to residents of the affected localities because they are getting contaminated water owing to these leaking pipelines, and water has also damaged roads and streets where it remains stagnant for days together.

She demanded of the KWSB managing director to direct the officials to immediately plug the leaking pipelines.

Sewage overflow: Major portion of a main road leading to Jauhar Square from Safari Park has been inundated by sewage on the eve of Eid. The filthy water on the road was causing inconvenience to motorists as well as pedestrians, besides creating an unhygienic environment in the locality.

A motorist said that the road, which was already in bad shape owing to ditches, will be damaged further if immediate steps were not taken to drain out the water, and the fault was not rectified.
