EU pledges to maintain privileged Pakistan access to European markets : ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: The European Union has pledged to maintain Pakistan's privileged access to European markets, Minister For Commerce Humayun Akhtar Khan said today. According to PTV, Junior Foreign Minister Nicolas Schmit said Pakistan needed preferential trade arrangements to support its economy because of its key geo political position in the region. Pakistan's economic development was essential for global political stability and the prevention of terrorism, Nicolas Schmit added. Humayun said, they have also assured us that they will be sensitizing the other member countries with respect to Pakistan's point of view. It may be mentioned here that Luxembourg has taken over the Presidency of the Council of European Union from 1st January 2005 onward. (APP) (Posted @ 22:40 PST) No dialogue while foreign troops remain : ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar has spurned a dialogue offer by the Afghan government and ruled out reconciliation as long as foreign troops remain in the country, Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) reported today. In a message Omar vowed to continue "jihad (holy war) which is the only way for liberation of Afghanistan from foreign occupation". "We don't see any need for talks, neither do we know which moderate Taliban the Afghan government is talking to, we would like to know who these people are posing as moderate Taliban," Omer said. He described the dialogue offer as "sham and baseless". (DPA) (Posted @ 23:00 PST) Abdul Rashid Dostum survives apparent suicide attack : KABUL, Jan 20: A man with explosives hidden beneath his clothes blew himself up near Abdul Rashid Dostum in northern Afghanistan today, wounding more than 20 people but not the apparent target, officials said. In another incident underlining the country's shaky security, suspected Taliban militants killed the driver of a truck delivering fuel to a U.S. military base. The suicide bomber tried to approach Abdul Rashid Dostum after open-air prayers on Eid al-Adha in the northern city of Sheberghan, a member of Dostum's security detail told The Associated Press. ``When the bodyguards stopped him from getting any closer, he blew himself up,'' Jawed, the security guard, said by telephone. Bush was sworn in to a second four-year term as president of the United States in a ceremony on the steps of the Capitol. (Reuters) (Posted @ 22:05 PST) Peruvian vice president suffers fainting spell, in intensive care: Lima, Jan 20: Peruvian Vice President David Waisman fainted as he was leaving a television station and was taken to the intensive-care unit of a Lima hospital where his condition was delicate, radio RPP said. The vice president, who underwent heart surgery several months ago, was to be taken to a heart facility, the radio said. Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo interrupted a meeting of the Council of Ministers to go to the hospital to visit Waisman. Waisman's driver said the vice president went to the television station for an interview and apparently when he emerged, he was extremely upset at remarks by opposition lawmakers questioning his ability to take over as president if embattled Toledo should leave office. Toledo, whose popularity rating is at 10 per cent, is enmeshed in a scandal involving his party, Peru Posible. The party is accused of forging signatures to register itself for 2000 elections. (DPA) (Posted @ 10:15 PST) Israel's security cabinet OKs military operation in Lebanon: Jerusalem, Jan 20: Israel's security cabinet approved in principle a military operation in Lebanon after three attacks by the Lebanese Hezbollah militia in the Israel-Lebanon border area in recent weeks, Haaretz newspaper reported. Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said Hezbollah wanted to prevent a rapprochment between Israel and new Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. "Hezbollah, Syria and Iran are doing everything to thwart any progress," he said. (DPA) (Posted @ 10:20 PST) Ukraine Supreme Court upholds Yushchenko poll win: KIEV, Jan 20: Ukraine's Supreme Court today upheld Viktor Yushchenko's victory in last month's presidential election re-run, clearing the way for his inauguration. Court Chairman Anatoly Yarema, issuing the ruling well following days of deliberation, said the judges had rejected an appeal filed by Viktor Yanukovich, Yushchenko's rival in the Dec. 26 poll. Yushchenko defeated Yanukovich in the ballot by a margin of eight percentage points.
