Militant held over Musharraf death plot: KARACHI, Jan 17: Mohammad Jamil Memon has been arrested for his alleged role in high-profile terror attacks including a plot to kill President Musharraf, police said today. Mohammad Jamil Memon, a member of the Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Alaami, was detained in Swat a few days ago, senior police investigator Manzoor Mughal said. Memon admitted his involvement in activities including the April 26, 2002 attempt to kill Musharraf in Karachi, when a remote-controlled device failed to detonate an explosives-laden van near the president's motorcade, police said. "Memon was initially arrested in Swat and will now be interrogated by Karachi police for his alleged role in high-profile cases here including the plot to kill the president," Mughal told AFP.    (AFP) (Posted @ 13:40 PST)

Abbas Orders Forces to Prevent Attacks on Israel: RAMALLAH, Jan 17: New Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ordered security forces today to prevent all attacks on Israel by militants who have defied his calls for calm. But militants, some warning there could be clashes with Palestinian forces, ruled out any halt to attacks before an end to "Israeli aggression" in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Israel described the measure as a "small step," but said Abbas must at least deploy forces to stop rocket fire from Gaza for the Jewish state to restore ties cut last week after an assault on a border crossing that killed six Israelis. "Abu Mazen (Abbas) and the cabinet gave clear instructions to the security chiefs to prevent all kinds of violence, including attacks against Israel," cabinet minister Qadoura Fares told Reuters. Officials said there was no exception for attacks on troops or settlers in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie said violators "will be punished."    (Reuters) (Posted @ 21:55 PST)

Deadly train fire which sparked Gujarat riots accidental: Indian government - NEW DELHI, Jan 17: A train fire that killed 59 Hindu pilgrims, setting off deadly sectarian riots in Gujarat state in 2002, was an accident and not caused by a Muslim mob as originally alleged, an Indian government investigation concluded today. "There has been a preponderance of evidence that the fire in coach number S6 originated in the coach itself without any external input," said retired Supreme Court judge U.C. Bannerjee, who headed the committee. "Moreover the possibility of an inflammable liquid having been used is completely ruled out as there was first a smell of burning, followed by then smoke and flames thereafter," he added.    (AFP) (Posted @ 16:25 PST)
