"We are seeking a mutual cease-fire to end this vicious circle." Frail Mandela Lays to Rest Son Who Died of AIDS: QUNU, Jan 15: Frail-looking Nelson Mandela buried his last son in a remote South African field today, wearing a red AIDS ribbon to symbolize the fight against the disease that killed him a week ago. Thousands of people, including South Africa's political elite, gathered near Mandela's childhood home in Qunu, where family members held a vigil overnight for his son Makgatho, 54. The 86-year-old anti-apartheid icon, holding a cane and supported by his wife Graca Machel, looked pained as he walked slowly to drop a yellow rose and handful of earth into the grave, where Makgatho was buried near his mother, brother and sister. Both Mandela and his wife, who grasped his hand on his knee for much of the ceremony, wore red ribbons supporting the war against an epidemic that affects an estimated one in nine South Africans -- more people than in any other nation. "The doctors are not optimistic about his condition," Frank Lu, director of the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy quoted the relative as saying today. "The hospital is giving him emergency treatment at the moment," the relative told Lu. Zhao served as both the head of the Communist Party and China's prime minister for much of the 1980s until being ousted in 1989 after opposing the military crackdown on the Tiananmen protests. He was first reported ill earlier this week. In a rare move, the Chinese foreign ministry Tuesday denied a Hong Kong newspaper report that Zhao had died, but confirmed he had recently received medical treatment. Beijing fears the death of Zhao would become a rallying point for disillusionment in Chinese society, including a soaring gap between rich and poor, analysts say. The Chinese foreign ministry did not immediately comment and said it was looking into the matter. Telephone calls to his former aide Bao Tong were cut off immediately. A statement issued by the human rights centre on Saturday said Zhao fell into a coma Friday around 7:00 pm (1100 GMT). "His relative was crying on the phone and calling for people who care for him to pray for him as he might leave this world tonight," the statement said.
