Escaped President Musharraf plotter from air force: ISLAMABAD, Jan 12: The plotter who escaped from military detention after being convicted of involvement in an attempt to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf held a junior rank in the air force, a spokesman said today. Mushtaq Ahmed broke out of a bathroom at the air force detention centre in the garrison city of Rawalpindi late last month after being sentenced to death for his role in an attempt to kill Musharraf in the city that adjoins Islamabad on Dec. 14, 2003. "He was a junior-level non-commissioned employee," said Air Commodore Sarfraz Ahmed, spokesmen for the Pakistan Air Force. "Efforts have been launched to catch him." Ahmed declined to provide further details. Intelligence officials said Ahmed, who was convicted and sentenced in late November, escaped by smashing a bathroom window at the detention centre. They said guards had been detained for questioning. The military says up to four low-ranking army personnel and six low-ranking air force personnel are still on trial in connection with the first attempt. Several members of a banned militant group, Jaish-e-Mohammad, have been arrested in connection with the second    (Reuters) (Posted @ 16:05 PST)

Israel Seeks to Stop Syria Missile Deal : JERUSALEM, Jan 12: Israel is trying to halt a weapons deal under which Russia agreed to supply advanced anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, fearing the missiles could fall into the hands of Lebanese guerrillas, Israeli officials said today. Israeli officials said the deal for the sale of the Igla SA-18s from Russia to Syria was signed several days ago. They are worried that the anti-aircraft missiles could be used by Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas, who have attacked Israel's northern border. The United States also could be concerned the missiles could be obtained by Iraqi insurgents, analysts said. A deputy Russian foreign minister is in the region to discuss the matter, Israeli officials said on condition of anonymity. Asked about the deal, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said: ``We have close contacts with the Russians. We had consultations over the past few days, and we hope to reach the necessary agreement.'' The press service of Russia's main arms export company, Rosoboronexport, said it had no information that Russia was planning such a sale. No one was immediately available for comment at the Russian Foreign Ministry.    (Guardiam) (Posted @ 23:45 PST)
