ADB approves 75 million dollar irrigation loan, grant to Afghanistan MANILA, Jan 5 (AFP) - Afghanistan is to get a 75 million dollar aid package from the Asian Development Bank to upgrade ancient irrigation systems and steer farmers away from the illegal drugs trade, the Philippines-based lender said Thursday. The project focuses on up to 65,000 hectares (160,550 acres) of traditional irrigation systems in the Hari Rud and Murghab river basins in the west, where the limited water supply has cut yields of wheat, the area's most important crop. The ADB package comprises a 60.5 million dollar soft loan payable over 40 years and a 14.5 million dollar grant. (Posted @ 09:55 PST)

Two Egyptian guards killed on Gaza border-MENA CAIRO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Two Egyptian guards were shot dead at the border with Gaza on Wednesday after armed Palestinians made a hole in the border wall, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted witnesses as saying.The MENA report quoted a hospital official as saying 18 people, including three members of the Palestinian security forces, had been taken to a hospital in Rafah. An earlier report said more than 10 Egyptian guards had been injured. The trouble started when Palestinian gunmen bulldozed a barricade with the Gaza Strip's border with Egypt. Egyptian police fired into the air to disperse the crowd. "The Palestinians responded with rocks and gunfire”. About had 300 Palestinians had tried to come through the border hole, MENA and the Egyptian security source said. Egyptian Interior Ministry officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Iraq group sets conditions to free minister's sister DUBAI, Jan 4 (Reuters) - A previously unknown group says it kidnapped the sister of Iraq's interior minister on Tuesday and set conditions for her release, including the freeing of some Iraqi women prisoners, Al Jazeera television said on Wednesday. Sharon aides leave hospital, decline comment JERUSALEM, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Top aides to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon left the Jerusalem hospital where he underwent surgery for a brain haemorrhage on Thursday, and declined to speak to reporters. A Reuters correspondent at the scene described the aides as being "grim-faced". Asked about Sharon's condition, his communication director, Asaf Shariv, said: "The doctors will make the announcement.
