Government protests to U.S. after soldier killed: ISLAMABAD, Jan 03: Government has protested to U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan after one of its soldiers was killed and three wounded by cross-border mortar fire at the weekend, a military spokesman said. The soldier was killed on Sunday in the North Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan, Major-General Shaukat Sultan said. (Reuters) (Posted @ 12:45 PST) Maulana Samiul Haq urged to review decision concerning boycott of MMA: PESHAWAR Jan 3: The MMA NWFP has urged Chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema -e-Islam Senator Maulana Samiul Haq to review his decision concerning boycott of the MMA. The request was made by a spokesman of the MMA NWFP Mufti Kifayatullah in a statement today. He said that all the disputed matters with in the ranks of the religious alliance could be sorted out through negotiations and added that there is no such issue that could not be settled by holding talks. (APP) (Posted @ 16:40 PST) Two explosions rocked Kalat: QUETTA, Jan 03: Two explosions rocked Kalat City today night. When contacted by phone, police told PPI that first explosion took place near the residence of Forest Officer Kalat. The explosion caused a two feet ditch in the ground. Window panes of nearby buildings and houses were smashed. However there was no casualty. Another explosion took place an hour after the first explosion. Two improvised bombs exploded and militants then shot at US troops in the early morning attack in Kunar province, US military spokesman Major Mark McCann told reporters. (AFP) (Posted @ 12:30 PST) Car Bombs, Explosion Kill 16 in Iraq : BAGHDAD, Jan 03: Three suicide car bombs, including one that exploded near the Iraqi prime minister's party headquarters in Baghdad, and a roadside explosion killed at least 16 people today as insurgents pressed their deadly campaign to disrupt national elections, which Iraq's defense minister said could be postponed to give the Sunni minority time to participate. A car bomb exploded late today near a U.S.-manned checkpoint to the Green Zone, the heavily fortified area housing the U.S. Embassy and Iraqi government offices, U.S. Embassy spokesman Bob Callahan said. U.S. troops surrounded a burning sport utility vehicle at the scene. Three bodies were seen burning inside the destroyed vehicle. The nationalities of the victims were not immediately known. Meanwhile, Iraqi Defense Minister Hazem Shaalan raised the possibility that elections scheduled for Jan. 30 could be postponed to try to persuade minority Sunni Muslims to participate in the vote. The first strike by an explosives-laden car near interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's Iraqi National Accord party headquarters killed two police officers and one civilian and injured 25 other people. The secular Shiite leader was not inside the building at the time, aides said. Today's second attack took place in Balad, about 50 miles north of the capital, killing four Iraqi National Guardsmen and wounding 14, U.S. military spokesman Neal E. O'Brien said. The driver of the car bomb died in the blast. The third strike occurred in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, killing at least six Guardsmen and injuring four others in a roadside explosion, police said. The radical Ansar al-Sunnah Army - known for numerous deadly attacks against U.S. troops, Iraqi forces and politicians - claimed responsibility. (Guardian) (Updated @ 23:00 PST) Israeli forces end northern Gaza raid: GAZA, Jan 03: Israeli forces ended an operation in the northern Gaza Strip less then 24 hours after they raided the area to try to stop cross-border rocket attacks by Palestinian militants, the army said today. Israeli television said the troops were withdrawn overnight after Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas complained that their presence would interfere with the Jan. 9 presidential election to choose a successor to Yasser Arafat. Israel has promised to pull its forces out of Palestinian towns at least 24 hours before voting begins. (AFP) (Posted @ 15:20 PST) US planes violate Iranian airspace: reports - TEHRAN, Jan 03: US warplanes flying out of bases in Afghanistan and Iraq have committed a string of violations of Iranian airspace, Iranian press reports said today. According to the Aftab newspaper, the latest violation came on Saturday when a US fighter flew at low altitude over an area in the northeastern province of Khorrasan which borders Afghanistan. "I will present my resignation to Prime Minister" Marek Belka, said Cimoszewicz, 54, who has led the foreign ministry since 2001. The post of speaker of the Sejm opened up last week after Jozef Oleksy, a former prime minister, was forced to resign after a special tribunal concluded he had lied about serving as an agent for the communist-era secret police. Cimoszewicz endorsed as his possible successor Adam Rotfield, a professional diplomat who currently serves as deputy minister. Dixit, a key behind-the-scenes international negotiator, died today after a heart attack, the prime minister's office said. He was active on warfronts from Afghanistan to Sri Lanka and instrumental in doing the spade work for the Indian government ahead of peace talks with the Pakistan government. The 6.2-magnitude quake hit near the Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal, the Hong Kong Observatory said.
