LAHORE, Dec 27: The six-party Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal alliance will not move courts in case Gen Pervez Musharraf backs out of his promise of taking off his uniform by Dec 31.

Alliance president and Jamaat-i-Islami amir Qazi Husain Ahmad told a 30-man delegation of religious scholars at Mansoora here on Monday that they would take recourse to the "court of masses" instead of going to higher courts on the uniform issue.

"The MMA will observe Jan 1 as a black day and continue the protest until supremacy of the Constitution and parliament is not restored." He said the alliance through the 17th Amendment had bound Gen Musharraf to take off uniform by Dec 31 when some political parties were engaged in an underhand deal over the issue.

Qazi Husain criticized the army for wrapping up the system whenever any politician established his position like the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif. He, however, said that the armed forces would stand with the masses when they come out on roads for the supremacy of the basic law and democracy.

He alleged that Gen Musharraf was protecting and promoting US interests in the region. He said exclusion of Jihadi teachings from text books with the connivance of the Agha Khan Board was an attempt to accomplish American agenda.

He vowed to eliminate the US role in the country and restoration of religion column in passports. Qazi Husain told a questioner that there were no differences among MMA constituents over any issue contrary to attempts and expectations of some powers.
