KARACHI: Witness declared hostile in blast case


KARACHI, Dec 11: An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Saturday declared a witness hostile in a blast case against two activists of a banned organization on the request of special public prosecutor.

Zeeshan Ali and Zafar Akram were arrested by the police on charge of planning an attack on Orangi police station.

According to prosecution, accused planned an attack on the PS, and for executing the plan, Zeeshan came to the police station to plant a bomb on June 13, but after seeing the police, he ran back and the bomb, present in his bag, went off, resulting in injuries to him.

Rahimullah and Abid were declared co-accused in the case. They were booked under Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosives Act.

Abdul Latif, who was present at the time of the incident, did not identify Zeeshan before the court on which SPP Naimat Ali Randhawa requested the court to declare the witness hostile for not supporting the prosecution case. He was later cross-examined by the SPP.

Head constable Mohammad Arif, during deposition, stated that he, along with other policemen, was standing outside the police station. He saw accused Zeeshan entering the police station. He ran back as he saw the policemen, but fell down and an explosion occurred. Later, he was taken to police station in an injured condition.

ATC Judge Arshad Noor Khan fixed the matter for Dec 13 for the next hearing.

DOCTORS CASE: Another prosecution witness was examined here on Saturday by an anti-terrorism court for Karachi division against Dr Akmal Waheed and Dr Arshad Waheed in a case registered by the Gulshan-i-Iqbal police.

Matih-ur-Rahman, owner of the "Orient " a Rent-a-Car company, deposing before judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti holding trial inside Karachi Central Prison stated that on May 26 a car was rented to Shehzad Ahmed Bajwa and Israr Ahmed on guarantee of Mohammad Afzal Farooqui, a reporter of a local newspaper. The witness in his examination-in-chief conducted by the special public prosecutor stated that the car was not returned and was later recovered from the house of accused Waheed brothers.

During cross-examination by M Ilyas Khan, Shaukat Hayat, advocate admitted in his statement before the police that he was not given the date when the delivery of the vehicle was given to the accused.-PPI/APP
