ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: Veteran Hameedul Haq sprang a big surprise on Tuesday by knocking out fourth seed Inam Gul in straight sets to qualify for the quarterfinal of the Federal Cup ranking tennis championship.
Hameed made good use of his experience to down his younger opponent, a Davis Cup player 6-3, 6-3 on the clay courts of the PTF Complex. Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Wasif Cheema, who defeated Khurrum Nazir 6-0, 6-0 and Asim Shafik, a 6-2, 6-1 conqueror of Omer Babar.
Shahzad Khan also went through with a 6- 4, 6-1 thrashing of Kamran Khalil. Nomi, the top seed in the absence of defending champion Aqeel Khan who is playing abroad, was an easy 6-4, 6-1 winner against Azeem Khan in the first round.
