KARACHI, Nov 20: The names of several noted personalities were approved for the governing body of the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) during a meeting, chaired by City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, on Saturday.

The institute may be inaugurated by the mid of next month, provided the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation builds a sub- station of 500KVA on its premises and a summary regarding the appointment of staff was approved by the end of this month, said a spokesman for the city government.

The spokesman told Dawn that at the high-level meeting, major problems faced by the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and the Karachi Medical and Dental College were also discussed in detail.

A committee - comprising DCO Fazlur Rehman, Prof Masood Javed, Prof Abdus Samad and Prof Sadia Aziz Karim - was constituted at the meeting. This committee would be deliberating on the issue of a governing body which was proposed to look after the affairs of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Karachi Medical and Dental College.

The nazim instructed the committee to submit a report within the next 15 days, said the spokesman. Once this report was ready, a proposal regarding the governing body would be presented formally to the City Council for final approval.

Meanwhile, the names of the notables who were nominated to the governing body of the KIHD were: Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, Prof Rafique Alam, Prof Masood Javed, Dr Abdul Haq, Tanveer Magoon and Yaseen Malik.

The governing body of Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases would have 14 members in all, said the spokesman. The body would be headed by City Nazim Naimatullah Khan. The naib nazim would be its senior vice-chairman and the DCO its vice-chairman.

The executive director of the institute would be the secretary of the governing body. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council would also nominate one person for the governing body, said the spokesman.

He said that the bottlenecks in the completion of the project were discussed at length during the meeting. The nazim was informed that 80 per cent of the construction work had been completed.

It was decided during the meeting that the staff of grade-16 and above would be appointed through the Public Service Commission. The staff of grade-15 and below would be appointed by the administration of the institute which had already constituted a committee for the purpose.

Naimatullah Khan also directed the officials concerned to submit with him a list of vacant posts in city government's health department by Nov 23, PPI adds.

He also sought report about health service, started in schools. It was informed that the city government was paying 250 doctors associated with school health service to provide medical facilities to students.
